RESEARCH
“Exploring Snapchat as a Dynamic Capture Tool for Social Exchange in Persons with
Aphasia” With Dr. Jerry Hoepner, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD),
University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire (UWEC), Summer 2015. Using the application Snapchat, researchers
examine the accessibility and effectiveness of communication among individuals with aphasia. Analysis of one
month’s catalogue of dynamic captures (videos or photos) of ten adults with varying degrees of aphasia will reveal
dimensions of their communication exchanges. Researchers will employ the ‘My-Story’ feature of Snapchat to
identify possible communication trends—i.e., changes in frequency or nature of dynamic captures over time,
whether posts prove influential to other posts, and what constitute the most common types of exchanges.
“Cochlear Implants and Voice Control.” With Dr. Jerry Hoepner & Dr. Abby Hemmerich, (CSD,
UWEC), Spring 2013. Collaborative project explored the variability of voice frequency in a 4 year old male
child with a cochlear implant, three years post implant. Results were based on both perceptual observations and
five acoustic measures. Analysis of all acoustic measures validated the perceptual observations which included
fundamental frequencies, jitter, shimmer, noise to harmonic ratio within normal limits. However, pitch sigma was
slightly higher than normative value.
“Aphasia Summer Research.” With Tania Riske SLP-CCC, Mayo Clinic Health System, Eau Claire
and Dr. Jerry Hoepner (CSD, UWEC), Summer 2013. Took part in clinical practicum with a 67 yr. old female
with aphasia and her family to model and facilitate supported conversation techniques, collaborative reading
intervention, and indirect partner training. I recorded daily notes of therapy progress over eight-week period:
patient’s overall self-reliance steadily increased, as did word repertoire.

“Flipping the Classroom” With Shannon Collins, M.A., CCC-SLP (CSD, UWEC), Fall, 2013.
Assisted Ms. Collins by looking up the latest research on flipping the classroom. In addition, we created a visual
aid representing the research findings of students reporting about video-self monitoring to use when Ms. Collins
presented at the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) convention.
“Engaging Students in the Classroom” With Rebecca Jarzynski, M.S., CCC-SLP (CSD, UWEC),
Fall 2013. Gathering data on D2L discussion board posts to explore how to engaging students in the classroom.
Analysis measures included number of questions asked about course content, number of posts, number of posts
read, percentage of comments on exam questions, comments indicating team cohesion. Findings presented by Ms.
Jarzynski at ASHA convention.
