Hall 9 Scholarships for Overall Excellence
Regulations
At Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall (Hall 9), we are committed to nurturing and developing its
residents into sensible, considerate, intellectual, loving and caring members of the community by
providing them with a warm, caring and civilised environment with a strong emphasis on the need
to comply with Hall and University Student Residence rules and regulations. The scholarships
will be awarded to acknowledge those residents who are able to display Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy
Wu Hall’s nature and spirit as well as to achieve scholastic excellence. The following regulations
shall apply as of 2015/16 (hereafter “award year”):
1.
The scholarships will be known as "Hall 9 Scholarships for Overall Excellence".
2.
The total number of scholarships awarded will be TWO to SIX for each award year.
3.
The maximum amount of each scholarship shall not exceed the amount of hall fees payable
for one semester of double-room occupancy in the following academic year, i.e. 2016/17
(hereafter “aid year”). Payment shall be made to the scholarship recipients by offsetting in
PART or in FULL the recipients’ hall fees payable for either Semester A or Semester B of
the aid year, whichever is appropriate. If the scholarship recipient is not required to pay for
the hall fee in the aid year, the hall- fee grant will automatically be forfeited.
4.
Eligibility:
To be eligible to apply for the scholarships, at the time of submitting application, the
applicant must demonstrate one or more of the following:
a. Outstanding academic performance based on their GPA (which must be at least 3.0
or above) in Semester A or Semester B, whichever is appropriate, of the award year;
and/or
b. Significant academic improvement as measured by comparing their GPA in the
award year and that in the immediately preceding year; and/or
c. Other significant non-academic achievements and/or outstanding personal
qualities (e.g. representing Hong Kong or the University in international or interuniversity events); and
d. Helpful and feasible future plan to make Hall 9 an academically better community in
the aid year
ii. Should exhibit outstanding contributions to community life at Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy
Wu Hall at hall and/or floor levels (e.g. active participation in Hall events and activities,
inter-Hall events and activities, intra-Hall activities, etc.) and overall integration within
the community of Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall;
iii. Should have good conduct and compliance with Hall and University Student Residence
rules and regulations;
iv. Must be a resident of Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall;
v. Should have already resided in Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall for at least one full
semester (summer term excluded);

Will continue to reside in Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall in the aid year;
Must be a non-final year student at the time of application; and
Not a recipient of this scholarship in the past.
The scholarship scheme is not applicable to those residents whose hall fees have already
been covered by any other scholarship / award scheme in the aid year and those who
will reach the University’s upper limit of a total amount of HK$160,000 after receiving
the hall scholarship.
All successful scholarship recipients are required to stay in the aid year in Sir Gordon
and Lady Ivy Wu Hall and are expected to play an active role in organizing academicrelated activities.
Should the scholarship recipient fail to meet the requirements as stated in the
Regulations of Hall Scholarships or violate Code of Student Conduct / Regulations at
Student Residence/ Hall Rules, the Scholarship Selection Panel reserves the right to
withdraw the award of scholarships at any time of the year, including the aid year.
With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community
Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award
recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University
of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Giving Club when they are in
employment after graduation. This term has been incorporated into all
scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors
or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008..
Procedures and Time Schedule for the Scholarships:
The procedures for awarding the Scholarships consist of the following three stages:
6.1 Application:
i.
Interested applicants should submit a completed application form.
ii.
All application information has to be submitted to the Residence Master of Sir
Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall via his mail box located at Sir Gordon and Lady
Ivy Wu Hall’s reception. Late submissions will not be considered.
iii. All applicants will be automatically considered for the Chan Sui Hung Best
Student Award.
6.2 Selection Interview:
i.
Short-listed applicants may be requested to attend an interview with a Selection
Panel on a date to be announced.
ii.
The Selection Panel will comprise the Residence Master of Sir Gordon and Lady
Ivy Wu Hall or his delegate, the Director of Student Residence Office (‘SRO’) or
his/her delegate, and other members where appropriate.
6.3 Results Announcement:
i.
The final decisions will be announced by May each year.
ii.
All decisions by the Selection Panel are final. No further appeals will be accepted.
