“Using Non-Manual Markers & Expansion Features in Educational
Interpretations”
By
Kevin Williams M.S.
January 21, 2012
Workshop/course Description:
This fun and highly interactive workshop will instruct educational interpreters as to
how to integrate non-manual (facial adverbs/adjectives) into their interpretations
*in conjunction with English articulation* frequently engaged in educational
interpretations (lexical specificity, etc). The workshop will also provide training
pertaining to the integration of language expansion (focus) features in educational
interpretations.
Participants will: 1) Analyze sign-language speakers and identify specific adverbs
and adjectives produced on the face, 2) Incorporate these facial grammatical
features within educational interpretations, 3) Learn how language users integrate
discourse expansions for topical clarity/focus, 4) Engage in classroom discourse
analysis (via media) to determine when to integrate focal features, 5) Render
interpretations integrate expansion/focal features
Presenter: Kevin Williams M.S.
Kevin T. Williams holds his M.S. in Teaching Interpreting from Western
Maryland College, Westminster, Maryland. For over 18 years he was employed
by Boys Town National Research Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, as their Sign
Communication and Curriculum Specialist and is the Director of the
Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Diagnostic Center.
While at Boys Town, and in collaboration with Dr. Brenda Schick (University of
Colorado-Boulder), Williams developed the Educational Interpreter Performance
Assessment (EIPA), a diagnostic instrument for educational interpreters and
their employing schools/districts. Other projects engaged in by Williams’
during his tenure at Boys Town included serving as the producer for the Sign
With Me parent sign language videotape curriculum and the Read With Me ASL
storytelling series.
Williams left Boys Town in 2005 and created the National Consortium on
Educational Interpreting, an LLC founded to provide educational and
diagnostic services for educational interpreters. He provided diagnostic
evaluation services for the EIPA Dx Center and consulted nationally on issues
related to inclusion and educational interpreting. In addition to EIPA cocreation, Williams also served as a content expert for the newly created
RID/NAD NIC certification test.
In the summer of 2008 Williams joined the faculty of the Rochester Institute of
Technology, specifically the faculty of the National Technical Institute for the
Deaf. Williams instructs in the area of interpretation and linguistics, teaching
both at RIT and also on-line courses for the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
He continues to serve as a diagnostic rater for the EIPA and travels extensively
presenting on issues of educational interpretation, child language, inclusion,
and ASL and English linguistics/structure.
Kevin, and partner Andrew, have 2 sons, 4 dogs, 1 cat, 1 cockatoo, and one
