As set forth in the UTC Faculty Handbook, “UTC’s Speakers & Special Events Committee is
allocated funds from the activities fee for the purpose of paying honoraria, travel expenses, and other
expenses for non-university related speakers or special events presented on campus for students and
other members of the University community. All faculty and students are invited to submit a
proposal for financial support for speakers, lectures, arts, and entertainment events sponsored by this
Committee.”
Funding for the S&SE Committee for the 2013-14 academic year was $30,000. Of this amount,
members awarded a total of $29,943 to applicants.
Fall 2013: The Committee reviewed 18 proposals submitted for the fall 2013 round. Of these, 16
were funded and two were denied. Only one proposal was fully funded. Fall semester 2013
applicants were awarded a total of $17,343 to help meet the $47,702 total costs of their speakers and
events.
Spring 2014: In January 2014, members met for a second time to review an additional 23 proposals.
Of these, 20 were funded at a total cost of $12,600, and three were denied. Only four Spring 2014
proposals were fully funded. The $12,600 awarded to applicants during the spring round helped
defray the $59,975.62 total costs of their speakers and events.
A wide variety of both UTC departments and outside sponsors also contributed funding for the
events funded by the S&SE Committee. Examples include the Office of Equity and Diversity
(OED), Art, THSP, the Meachum Fund, UHON, philosophy, religious studies, sociology, political
