This product-based unit was written to be used in an Intermediate ESL classroom. The objective of the unit is to instruct learners how to search
for and apply for jobs online. Students will also explore the responsibilities and requirements of Citizenship during this unit.

Teacher Notes:
AP-1: Teacher will introduce students to unit. Teacher will review email vocabulary with the vocabulary match worksheet.
AP-2: Teacher will pass out the worksheets and show the video: “Creating a word document.” The students will fill out the worksheet that
accompanies it. The teacher will pause as needed during the video to assist students in filling out the worksheets. (Video-1:49)
AP-3: Students will watch the video: “Saving a word document” and fill out the worksheet. The teacher will pause as needed during the video to
assist students in filling out the worksheets. (Video-2:27)
AP-4: Students will watch the video: “How to attach a word document” and fill out the worksheet. The teacher will pause as needed during the
video to assist students in filling out the worksheets. (Video-2:21)
AP-5: Students will look at a sample cover letter and complete the “What is a Cover letter” T/F worksheet.
AP-5.1: Students will read the text “What is a Cover Letter?” and complete the “What is a Cover Letter” T/F worksheet.
AP-5.2: Students will complete the sample cover letter using words from the word bank.
AP-6: Students will create and save a cover letter using S1:AP5 as a reference.
SP-1: Teacher will send students an email asking for the cover letter in an attachment. Students will complete the Section Product by responding
to the email and attaching their cover letter to the email.

Teacher Notes:
AP-1: The teacher will introduce what a Personal Data Record is-“A PDR is to keep for your information. When you need the information for
applying for jobs it will be in one place and make it easier to complete an application.” The teacher will go over vocabulary from AP-1worksheet
and then pass out worksheet for students to work on in groups or teams or individually, depending on abilities of group.
AP-2: The teacher will pass out the word search for students to work on in teams, groups or individually.
AP-3: The teacher will pass out a completed PDR and have students answer the questions that refer to this completed record.
SP2.1: Students will fill out their own Personal Data Record
SP2.2: Students will take their information from their own Personal Data Record and transfer that information to the online Personal Data
Record in Google Drive.
NOTE: Teacher, make sure to mention the importance of consistency in first and last names. These are used to track information and
if they change the information will not go with the person!!!

AP-1: Teacher will show PPT and introduce students to becoming a citizen (An Introduction to Naturalization). Students will fill out worksheet
that accompanies the PPT.
AP-2& AP-2.1: Teacher will discuss importance of residency and how to read a residence card. Students will fill out worksheet on “Reading a
Permanent Resident Card.”
AP-3.1 & 3.2: Teacher will introduce the “Oath of Allegiance” and discuss terms that are new to student. Students will complete the vocabulary
sheet and the Fill-in-the-Blank worksheets to further their knowledge of the terms used in the Oath.
AP-4: Teacher will introduce terms from page 9 of the N-400 and have students fill out together or in small groups, the vocabulary sheet.
AP-5: Teacher will introduce the “N-400” to students and pass out the vocabulary sheet for students to complete.
AP-5.1 & AP-5.2: Teacher will introduce the “Role Play Activity” to students and help them to complete a conversation with paired students.
SP3: Teacher will have students fill out pages 1 and 9 of the N-400 Citizenship Application.

AP-1: Teacher will hand out self-assessment and ask students to follow along while the items are described and questions are answered. When
discussion is over, ask students to fill out form OR they can fill the information out during the discussion. When done, fill out the bottom and
count the # in each column. Put in box below. Transfer information to the next page and read through the descriptions of categories as a class.
Give students time to look through jobs in those areas in the MN Careers Book. (Or online www.ISEEK.org/careers/assessyourself.html
AP-2: Have students fill out self-inventory. Talk about how this fits with some of the careers they looked at with the assessment.
AP-3: Have students read through the vocabulary sheet as a small group or as a large group (depending on abilities) and have them do the
matching as a small group or as a large group.
AP-4: Have the students search three jobs using the guidelines on AP4. Have them choose one job to fill out AP5.
AP-5: Have students choose one career and fill out the worksheet about that job.
