Objective of the
activity
Students will determine the main idea of the story and find supporting
details throughout the story.
Materials Needed
Teacher needs:
The story, Chrysanthemum
Main Idea worksheet (one per student)
Anchor chart
Students need:
Markers or colored pencils
Scissors
Glue
Teacher will begin by explaining main idea through an anchor chart and
giving the students clues of how to determine the main idea. The teacher
will then read Chrysanthemum to the class. After reading the story there
will be a brief discussion and the students will provide the main idea of
the story and give a few supporting details that they heard. Then the
teacher will hand out a main idea worksheet for the students to do.
The students will listen to the story and find the main idea. The students
will then complete the main idea worksheet for the story Chrysanthemum.
The worksheet is like a table. The table top is the main idea and the legs
are the supporting ideas. They will complete the worksheet on the story
and then créate their main idea table top which they will color.
