Pupil Premium at Halewood Academy
What is Pupil Premium?
The Government have used students eligible for Free School meals as an indicator for students who
are classed as disadvantaged. If a student is currently on Free School meals or has ever been on Free
School meals in the previous six years, Halewood Academy is given extra funding. This funding
changes every year and is set for the academic year 2014-2015 @£923 per student. Students who
are looked after or whose parents are in the armed forces are also included in the Government’s
additional funding.
What is the aim of Pupil Premium?
The aim of the funding is to close the gap in progress and attainment that currently exists between
students who are disadvantaged and those who are not. Nationally students who are eligible for this
funding have not achieved GCSE grades as high as their non pupil premium peers.
Halewood Academy’s aim
At Halewood Academy we aim to not only narrow the attainment gap but close the gap through a
number of initiatives. These have included for 2013-2014:

Achievement
Key Stage 3 - There was no evidence of tracking of the achievement and progress of disadvantaged

groups including Pupil Premium students from Year 7 to Year 11. The progress of all pupil groups is
tracked throughout Key Stage 3. In 2013-14 the average levels of progress in core subjects in each
year group was as follows. Students are expected to progress by 2 sublevels each year, therefore 2

Key Stage 4 - The government has accepted that there are a significant number of changes that have
adversely affected GCSE results this year. These changes include a move from modular to end of
year exams, the 'First Entry' rule and changes to vocational qualifications. The Department for
Education stated, “The changes that have been implemented in 2013/14 have had an impact across
all types of schools and it means that it is not possible to make direct comparisons between 2013/14
results and earlier years."

Pupil Premium at Halewood Academy
Moving forward 2014-2015
During 2013/14 the initiatives that were in place to close the attainment gap were not as successful
as planned and therefore some strategies have been removed from the 2014-2015 spending plan.
An action plan has been written by the Assistant Principal responsible for pupil premium and a revise
spending plan has been submitted to the Governors.
