The University of Cape Town has a strong international reputation in ocean and climate research
and teaching. Within the Department of Oceanography, particular areas of interest include the
Agulhas and Benguela Current systems, the Southern Ocean, climate change and variability,
marine biogeochemistry, severe weather and mesoscale meteorology, and modelling. The
department seeks to appoint a lecturer with expertise in a field of Ocean or Atmospheric
Sciences who complements and extends existing strengths.
The department has well developed computing facilities (including access to the Centre for High
Performance Computing in Rosebank), a marine biogeochemistry laboratory, and access to ship
time for research cruises in the South Atlantic, South Indian and Southern Oceans.
A PhD in Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, or related field by the time of appointment is
required together with some evidence of publication in high quality research journals. The
incumbent will be expected to contribute strongly to teaching undergraduate and Honours level
courses offered by the Oceanography Department and to develop her / his own research
programme with appropriate training and supervision of postgraduate students. Evidence of
some experience in lecturing and/or tutoring undergraduate students is desirable.
Some postdoctoral experience would be advantageous.
The annual remuneration package for 2014, including benefits, is R484 656.
