Endangered/ Extinct Power Point
1. What does it mean to be extinct? All members of a certain kind of living
thing have died.
2. A long time ago, extinctions were caused by natural events such as climate
change.
3. Examples of these extinctions were the dinosaurs,
Wooly Mammoths,
and Saber-Toothed Cats
4. List 4 animals that have only recently become extinct.
Baiji Dolphin
Pyrenean Ibex
Hawaiian Crow
Golden Toad
5. The destruction of an animal’s habitat such as the clear cutting of forests is
one cause of extinctions.
6. Cutting habitats up into small pieces interferes with an animal’s ability to
get to food and water.
(Habitat Fragmentation)
7. Introduction of plants or animals that are not native to an area can crowd
out the native plants and animals.
8. Pollution by oil, chemicals, trash and other contaminants can harm the
environment and all the animals in it.
9. Overhunting can cause animals to become extinct. The musk-ox nearly
became extinct in this way, but conservation efforts and strict rules about
hunting saved it from extinction.
10.Endangered means nearly all the members of a living thing have died and
there is chance that animal might become extinct.
11.Threatened animals are ones whose numbers are dwindling and might
become endangered if not protected.
12.Name 3 current endangered animals relict leopard frog,
Colorado Pikeminnow, Lange’s Metalmark Butterfly
13.People can help stop extinctions by setting up and maintaining animal
refuges, by obeying hunting and fishing laws, and by not releasing animals
into the wild that do not belong there.
