Gallery Elena Shchukina Xawery Wolski Biography: Xawery Wolski (b. Warsaw, 1960) is a Polish-Mexican visual artist. He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in his native Warsaw (1983), before the New York Studio School (1984), and the Academie des Beaux Arts in Paris (1988, studio César). He has had a long period of association with the culture of Mexico, and is currently based between Poland and Mexico. Wolski’s work reveals a deep sense of connection with the earth – much of his work shares a muted colour palette of blacks, browns, greys, and whites. His interest in the organic world is also evident in the sinuous abstract shapes that fill his artistic practice. Many of his works are inspired by Mexico’s ancient tradition of crafting in terracotta, but his creativity is not restricted to a single medium – he works in ink on paper, in granite, in clay, and in textile. His work has been exhibited widely in Europe and the Americas since he began sculpting in 1983. A selection of his solo and group exhibitions from 2002 is listed below. He has been awarded numerous accolades including a grant from the Krasner Pollock Foundation (2008), and has had residencies at the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok (2008) and the Vermont Studio Center (2012). His work can also be found in the collections of the Museo de Arte Moderna in Mexico, Mordena Museet in Sweden, and the Worldbank Art Program in Washington, D.C. A selected list of his exhibitions since 2004 is available below.
