Updated 1/27/2014
A. It is the responsibility of the Dreamy Days Child Care facility to
prepare plans whereby the facility, or parts thereof, can be evacuated
quickly in the case of an emergency. Causes for emergency and/or
evacuation could be: fire, bomb threats, explosion, flood, severe
thunderstorm, severe winter storm, hurricane, tornado, toxic fumes,
electrical failure or structural failure, chemical spills, train
derailment, and/or violent act/intruder. In an emergency and/or
evacuation situation, Dreamy Days Child Care Facility should
proceed with the appropriate plan as rapidly and safely as possible.
The plans shall be developed considering four scenarios of
emergency and/or evacuation.
Those being:
1. Shelter-in-Place: Keeping children and staff members in place
but securing the location for the emergency at hand. Example:
Chemical Release, Hazardous Incident, or Severe Weather)
2. On-site evacuation: Movement of children and staff members out
of areas of the building affected and relocated to other safe areas
of the building.
3. Off-site evacuation: Movement of part or all children and staff
member off the Dreamy Days location site to another designated
area.
4. Lock Down: Children will remain in classroom or other
designated safe location away from danger. The code word used
for a Lock Down event will be “Code Red”. (violent act or intruder)
B. The Center Director(s) will review the Emergency & Evacuation
Plan annually and update as needed. A copy of an updated plan will
be placed in each of the four classrooms as well as the Office.
C. Each employee at the Dreamy Days Facility shall be made familiar
with the plan and trained in his/her responsibilities within the plan
two times annually. New employees shall receive this training during
their orientation period.
D. Floor plans shall be developed for each area and posted in public
view showing exits and directional paths for traffic flow in the event
that an evacuation of the building is necessary.
E. Fire drills will be held once monthly. It is recommended that one drill
be held during nap time at least once during each six month period.
Documentation of Fire Drills will be kept on file.
F. Tornado drills will be held during the months of March, April, May,
and June. Drills will be conducted at various times of the day to
include all children. Documentation of Tornado Drills will be kept on
file.
G. A copy of the Dreamy Days Facility Multi-Hazard Emergency &
Evacuation Plan will be made available to parents on the Center’s
website www.dreamydays.net.
H. All parents, upon registering their child(ren) with the center, will sign
a statement acknowledging that they have been made aware of the
Dreamy Days’ Multi-Hazard Emergency & Evacuation Plan.
I. The Dreamy Days center will maintain updated Master Card forms
in a portable file that will be used to notify parents/guardians in the
event of an emergency or evacuation of the facility. Notification of
evacuation or an emergency situation to parents/guardians will occur
immediately after all center children and staff are considered safe and
secure. Only those individuals listed on the Master Card will be
allowed to pick up a child that has been evacuated. Any person that
picks up a child enrolled in our center must present a pictured
identification card in the event that individual is not recognized by
Dreamy Days’ Staff.
J. Each morning of business a complete center head count will be
performed by the Center Director/Designee and compared against the
Sign In/Out Log to ensure that all children are accounted for in the
event of an emergency.
K. All children that are “walkers” will be escorted out in the event of an
emergency evacuation. Any child that does not walk will be carried
by a staff member or placed in a wagon to ride to a safe place if
evacuated from the facility. Child to Staff Ratios must be maintained
throughout the day to ensure timely evacuations. This will be done
even during lunch breaks.
L. Any child that is enrolled with special needs will have an
individualized emergency plan developed by the center director along
with that child’s parents to ensure that all needs are met. This plan
will be kept with that child’s Master Card in the portable file.
M. Center Director/Designee will carry a cell phone on his/her person at
all times to ensure that communication lines will be available should
the center be evacuated.
N. Each classroom will be equipped with a stocked Emergency
Evacuation Backpack. These will be taken out with each class, by
staff, during all drills and actual evacuations from the building. The
office will also have an Evacuation Backpack that will need to be
carried out as well during drills and actual evacuations from the
building. This one will be carried by the Center Director/Designee.
The office backpack will contain the portable file with Parent contact
numbers as well as emergency authorizations.
O. The Dreamy Days Center cannot function without electricity and/or
water for an extended period of time. Should the Dreamy Days’
Center encounter a utility outage (water and/or electricity), Secondary
staff (center director(s)/designee) will contact utility companies to
obtain a power/water outage estimate. Should the estimate of time
not be acceptable (within one hour), parents will be contacted for
pick-up of all attending children.
P. All company files will be backed up on a portable hard drive and in
the possession of the center director (off-site). Employee files will be
copied and stored on the back up hard drive as well at an off-site
location during non-operational hours or in the event of an
emergency situation/evacuation.
Q. In the rare instance of a train derailment, the center will follow
whatever measures needed to keep children and staff safe. The
decision to evacuate or shelter in place will be left up to the center
director(s)/designee and/or the proper authorities. Once the decision
is made, staff will follow the proper procedures for either the
evacuation to nearby/far site or shelter-in-place.

Dear Parents,
Our child care center’s philosophy is to keep your child(ren) safe at all times when he/she is in our
care. We have developed an emergency plan that will be put into effect in the event that special
circumstances require a different type of care. Causes for emergency procedures can and will
include: fire, bomb threats, explosion, flood, severe thunderstorm, severe winter storm, hurricane,
tornado, toxic fumes, electrical failure or structural failure, chemical spills, train derailment, and/or
violent intruder/act. Plans for these special types of care are reviewed and updated annually. Staff
is trained in the appropriate response and local emergency management is aware of these plans. The
specific type of emergency will guide where and what special care will be provided.
 Shelter at the site – this plan would be put into place in the event of a weather emergency
or unsafe outside conditions or threats. In this plan, children will be cared for indoors at the
center and the center may be secured or locked to restrict entry. Parents will be notified if
they need to pick up their child before their regular time.
 Lockdown—This plan will be put into effect should the center be threatened by a violent
intruder and/or act. The children and staff will remain in their classrooms or other safe
designated area away from danger.
 Evacuation to another site - This plan would be put into place in the event that it is not
safe for the children to remain at the center. In this situation, staff has a predetermined
alternate site for care. Our nearby alternate site for care is located at 206 Avenue E
Broussard, Louisiana 70518 at the Community Fitness Gym. Our far away evacuation site is
located at 1205 South Hugh Wallis Road Lafayette, La. 70508. The children and staff will be
transported by People Haulers in the event that a far evacuation is needed.
 Method to contact Parents – In the event of an emergency, parents will be called, a note
will be placed on the door, and radio/TV stations will be alerted to provide more specific
information. You can also check for information on our website www.dreamydays.net or
call our office at 337-839-8967 for a recording (after being evacuated).
 Emergency Ends/ Reuniting with children – When the emergency ends, parents will be
informed and reunited with their children as soon as possible. The contact methods listed
above will be used to inform parents.
The purpose for sharing this information with you is not to cause you to worry, but to reassure you
that we are prepared to handle all types of emergencies in a way that will ensure the safety of your
child(ren). During an actual emergency, please do not call the center- it will be important to keep
the lines open. If you have questions regarding this information, please talk with either Michelle or
Melanie at 337-839-8967. A full copy of the multi-hazard emergency and evacuation plan can be
viewed on our website www.dreamydays.net.
Sincerely,
Michelle Armentor and Melanie A. Morgan
Center Directors
Shelter in Place—means that staff and children will seek
immediate shelter and remain there during an emergency
rather than evacuate the area. Shelter-in-place should
only be used when an evacuation is not safe. Certain
events may necessitate the initiation of the Center’s
Shelter-in-Place Protocol. The decision to Shelter-inPlace will be made by the Center Director(s) and/or
Designee.
Shelter-in-Place (hazardous incident)
In the event of a critical incident where hazardous (including chemical,
biological, or radiological) materials may have been released into the
atmosphere either accidentally or intentionally, a decision to Shelter-inPlace may be the preferred method of safely waiting out the release.
The following recommendations will be followed:
1. Move to rooms with few or no windows that can open or are open.
We will move to the Tiger Room.
2. Rooms that have little or no ventilation are preferred.
3. Close any open windows and doors if you cannot move to
designated room.
4. Only come out when told to do so by Center Director, Designee,
and/or the proper authorities (Police, Haz-Mat, Fire Department)
5. Turn off all AC/Heat units.
6. Seal up exterior doors by stuffing towels and/or blankets at the
bottom of the door. Close all interior doors.
Shelter-in-Place (weather) Procedures:
A severe weather event, such as a tornado or wind event during
normal operating hours (6:30 am – 6:00 pm) of the Dreamy
Days Center may necessitate you to Shelter-in-Place until the
threat of bad weather has passed. In order to increase our
chances of survival during such weather the following
recommendation will be adhered to:
1. Move to the “interior most” room or hallway. We will
move to the area designated for our Tornado Drills, the
hallway and wall by the oven in the kitchen. This move will
be activated by a whistle blow.
2. If, for some reason a class is unable to move to designated
area, then move to a room with little or no windows. This
room will be the Tiger Room.
3. Stay in the center of the room away from doors and
windows and assume the “tuck” position for safety.
4. Stay in place until the danger has passed.
5. Blankets and pillows should be placed over children by
staff for extra protection.
The exterior doors will remain locked during all Shelter-in-Place
events.
Lock-down (violent acts) Procedures
In the event of the presence of a person or persons or act deemed by the
Center Director(s) and/or Designee to be a threat to the Dreamy Days’
Center, a decision to Lock Down would be made in consultation with the
Broussard Police Department, if available. This is the preferred method
of keeping individuals out of harms’ way: controlling traffic in the
center and controlling access to the building.
Upon receiving notification to Lock Down/ “Code Red”
1. Stay in your classroom until advised to move to another area by the
Center Director(s) and/or Designee.
2. Notify those around you and encourage others to remain in your
classroom rather than try to leave the building.
3. Lock the doors, cover the door window, pull down the blinds, turn
off the lights and stay calm.
4. Stay away from the windows.
5. Staff shall encourage children to get under tables. If possible,
engage children in a quiet story time activity until an “all clear” is
announced. The key is to remain calm.
6. Check emails for updates if able to do so.
7. Report any suspicious activity, sounds or smells to the Center
Director(s) and/or Designee or to 911.
