Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena offers Salvador a center for sports,
entertainment and business
The Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena is the most modern multiuse equipment of Bahia, considered by the fans as
the best arena of the World Cup 2014. Located in Salvador, it brings an unprecedented structure to Bahia,
with the potential to host international matches and major sports events, as well as putting the state in the
circuit of international shows and business tourism.
As a result of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Government of the State of Bahia, the OAS
and the Odebrecht, the Arena held its first event on April 07 2013, with an inaugural spectacle followed by
the main football derby in Northeast, the “BA-VI”, between Esporte Clube Bahia and Esporte Clube Vitória.
In the first months of operation, the arena has hosted matches from national and international
competitions, including three matches of the 2013 Confederations Cup, and six matches of the 2014 World
Cup, with the national teams of Uruguay, Nigeria, Italy, Brazil, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and
France.
Since the beginning of the works in 2010, more than 10,000 people were involved at the implosion of the
old structure and construction of the new equipment, up to the current operation phase. On days of
matches or events, the Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena employs up to three thousand professionals, both
directly and indirectly.
With capacity for 50,000 people in covered seats, the Arena features 10 levels and three rings of bleachers,
and follows the highest international standards. It unites comfort, safety and technology, and due to the
new inclination of the bleachers, it provides the public a greater proximity to the spectacle.
There are 70 boxes, about two thousand parking spaces, press room, 40 food stands, 10 elevators, 94
restrooms, shops, beyond a cultural center and an area of 1,300 m² overlooking the field and the Tororó
Dyke, which should operate in 2015.
Naming rights
Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena is the first of the new Brazilian multiuse arenas to sign a naming rights contract.
In order to have this privilege, the Petrópolis Group is investing R$ 10 million per year for 10 years. The
agreement grants Itaipava and other company brands the right to market their products exclusively in all
bars and restaurants of the equipment.
The partnership preserves the name Fonte Nova, nickname given by the public to the Octavio Mangabeira
Stadium at the time of its foundation in 1951. The memory of the famous Bahia governor, responsible for
implementing the first stadium, is revered in the official name of the sports and cultural complex.
Innovation and certifications
Marked by innovation, the implosion of the old structure was the first in Brazil and the second in Latin
America. The installation of the roof was another milestone of innovation with the realization for the first
time in Brazil of the Big Lift, great hoisting of tensioned steel cables of the roof, which brought together a
highly qualified team of engineers from Germany, Switzerland, France, United States and Brazil. The roof
covers 100% of the seats, reaching 36 000 m² and providing more comfort to visitors.
The Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena also stands out for acquiring certifications, being the first arena in the world
to receive the International Quality Certification ISO 9001 for Quality Management System for Construction
Scope of Multiuse Arenas.
The Arena was also the first one in Brazil to win the silver category in the internationally recognized
certification system LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Several features of the arena
were evaluated for it to be considered an environmentally friendly development, including the reuse of 100%
of the concrete from the old Fonte Nova, the capture of rainwater from the roof to reuse in toilets and
irrigation of the lawn; the louvers on the facade, allowing natural ventilation and lighting, but also
protecting from excessive solar radiation, and the use of high output lamps, meeting international
standards of energy efficiency.
Comfort and Safety
Built according to international standards, the Arena offers comfortable facilities for the regulars, with
modern seats, roof and food stands.
More than 200 security cameras in high definition and range make all the control and preventive
identification of inappropriate attitudes. The safety in the operation of Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena is an
extremely important item, always with the focus on prevention and comfort of the public.
To assist in safety and protection, the Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena has a Command and Operations Center
with cutting-edge technology, where all actions required for the full operation of the Arena are coordinated.
With the help of high-resolution cameras, the areas of safety, health and fire brigade are monitored,
allowing immediate action if necessary.
Grass
In the field of Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena, which occupies an area of 9000 m², the Bermuda grass was
planted, from the type Celebration. The planting is sprigs type (manual spreading of grass on branches) and
the seedlings are from suppliers located in the city of Lavras, in southern Minas Gerais, in a temperature of
13°. All systems that compose the field (irrigation, drainage, etc.) are automated.
The grass irrigation system has 35 sprinkler heads, raised to surface by water pressure. Each of them is
controlled by a specific and automated valve, and can be triggered by computer. The field of Itaipava Fonte
Nova Arena also has sensors for humidity and temperature to help in control and maintenance.
It is also used, when necessary, an artificial lighting of the grass, through high-tech equipment that
simulates solar irradiation and promotes the growth of grass.
During large scale non-sporting events, the grass is protected with a protection molded in polypropylene
plastic, highly resistant to impacts, the easyfloor plus, a special floor that completely covers the field and
sidelines.
Seats
The color (shades of green) on the seats of Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena refers to the green waters of the
Tororó Dyke - a natural fountainhead of the city of Salvador, listed by the National Institute of Historic and
Artistic Heritage. There are three types of folding seats with and without armrests, all with backrest made
of plastic resin. The chairs in the boxes have padded seat with arm and padding made of polyurethane.
Illustrations
The concept of a multipurpose arena is also represented in the modern internal visual communication of
the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova. The "dressing", which is the illustration that covers the concrete of the
three rings of bleachers, was produced with references of Bahia. The new identity reinforces the idea that
music, soccer, art, culture and celebration have a place in common which receives events of different public
and sizes. The purpose is to bring more color and humanize the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova, bringing it
closer to its the audience with modern and international inspirations. The designer responsible for creating
the illustration is the Baiana (from Bahia) Maira Almeida, rooted in California, and now living New York. In
the business for 18 years, she created elements that inserted rhythm, movement and music to the
equipment, which values Bahia, with an international and globalized tone. It also makes reference to other
arenas around the world.
Sustainability
The Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena maintains during its operation the sustainable initiatives incorporated since
the construction phase. Currently, the arena reuses rainwater through the collection taken from the roof
membrane of the equipment. 37 000 m³ of rainwater will be captured annually with this system, which will
represent an economy of 72% in rainy seasons and 24% during drought periods.
In the social area, Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena signed an agreement with the Department of Education of the
State of Bahia and will take for free until the end of the year 630 people, among public school students,
parents and teachers, to the Brazilian Football Championship, performed on Sundays. The partnership,
titled Student at the Arena is a Ball Show, aims to bring them closer to the newest multiuse equipment of
Bahia, providing access to sport and leisure. Moreover, Itaipava Fonte Nova Arena supports projects like
Pink October, which prevents Breast Cancer, and the campaigns Blue November and A Touch, A Dribbling,
for the Prostate Cancer prevention.
