SUPREME COURT
UNSUITABLE
VIOLENCE
Books are challenged or banned in some areas of the U.S. and in other
countries for a variety of reasons, including objections on moral, religious,
and political grounds. References to violence, profanity, sexuality, racism,
drug and alcohol use, and the occult receive the most complaints.
American Library Association’s Statement on Intellectual Freedom:
“ALA actively advocates in defense of the rights of library users to read,
seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment.
A publicly supported library provides free and equal access to information
for all people of that community. We enjoy this basic right in our
democratic society. It is a core value of the library profession.”
American Library Association. “Intellectual Freedom.” American Library
Association. 2011. Web. 22 Sept. 2011.
