ATTENDANCE. (P. 13-14) of the OHS Student Handbook covers this topic. Please encourage your child to
be aware of the requirements for ATTENDANCE. I have been OHS Principal for three years. There seems to be
confusion on this topic every year around this time. I want you to know that the policies are covered page by
page at the beginning of school and a parent signature is required that states the information in the handbook is
understood. We have the ATTENDANCE policy in place to assist each student with academic success.
“Attending” school is the number one indicator for academic success. Having the “seat time” is the issue when
absences and tardies are discussed as an indicator for academic success/failure nationwide. Also, please note
that COTO students have policies related to their attendance on their campus. However, COTO refers back to
the Ouachita Student Handbook as the primary policy manual in addition to their policies. Call and visit with
me if you have questions. I can assist PRIOR to an ABSENCE. There is little I can do AFTER the fact however.
GOOD NEWS: Here are a few items of GREAT NEWS at OHS and OJHS. (Had to be brief due to space.)
 FFA National Team. The Ouachita FFA Dairy Team competed at the 88th National FFA convention
and expo held at Louisville, Kentucky October 26-30. There were over 60,000 FFA members and
guest present during the convention. Ouachita FFA Dairy team members competing during the
convention included: Kameron Gills ('15), Jarrett Norwood, Savannah Klais and Josh McGill. This is a
huge honor for these students to represent Arkansas. Ouachita FFA President Zayne Morrison also
attended along with Mr. Heath Lee, Sponsor. This is a CHAMPIONSHIP program at Ouachita!
 National Beta Inductees. Sponsor Chandra Helms welcomed fifteen new Senior Beta members into
the National Beta Club. Sponsor Kandy Spurlin welcomed thirty five new Junior Beta members into
the newly formed Junior Beta Club. Academic Excellence displayed at its best in this example.
 Junior Regional Choir. Congratulations to the Junior High Choir members who represented Ouachita
at Regional Choir. Whitney Yates (All-Region), Rozlyn Glasqow, Meagan Childers and Randilynn
Norris. Mr. Robbie Byler is the Ouachita Music Director.
 Senior Regional Choir. Congratulations to Eden Fagel, Mikayla Buck and Jessie Morrison who
became the first Ouachita Senior Choir students since at least 2012 (Mr. Byler's first year) to make the
All Region Choir team. We are proud of all twelve students who tried out and represented our school.
 Golf. Boys and Girls Golf won DISTRICT and went to STATE! Great job Coach Brown and students.
GO WARRIORS!
