General:
As the second largest city in the Yangtze River Delta after Shanghai, Nanjing is the political,
economic and cultural center of Jiangsu province. With a history of 2,500 years, Nanjing is
regarded as one of the Four Ancient Capitals of China. It has a population of 8.1 million and
covers a total area of 6,598 square kilometers.

Nanjing is a key transport hub, with a network combining shipping, airway, railway, and highway.
The fastest high speed railway takes one hour to travel to Shanghai and 4 hours to Beijing. Nanjing
enjoys the reputation of “door of the east and west, throat of the south and north” and is the
important water transport hub along Yangtze River.
Nanjing is an important comprehensive industrial production base in China. The local government
has set up priority guidelines of eight industry sectors, including: new materials, new energy, biopharmaceuticals, new electro-optical products, environmental equipment, aviation equipment, rail
transport equipment, and advanced ship manufacturing. The city is a traditional base for
automotive, electronics, iron and steel, petrochemical industries.
Nanjing boasts rich resources in science, technology and education. There are over 50 colleges
and universities with more than 700,000 students, plus over 600 R&D institutes of national and
provincial level with more than 700,000 science and technology talents, including 77 academicians
of China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering. This explains its winning of a
series of titles, namely Pilot City for Innovative Development, China Famous Software City, China
Service Outsourcing Base, and National Software Export & Innovation Base.
Nanjing will be hosting the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games from August 16 to 28, 2014.
Major Industrial Zones
Nanjing is an open city with 12 development zones of provincial level and above, including 4 ones
of national level. Among the Fortune 500 Companies, 91 have invested here, including VW,
Motorola, Ford, BASF, Ericsson, Siemens, Sharp, LG and so on.
Four National Industrial Zones:

Jiangning Economic & Technological Development Zone (JNDZ)

Overview: Founded in 1992 as a state-level economic development zone, it is situated in the
south of Nanjing, 7 km from the urban center,20 km from Xinshengwei Port (the largest river
port in China), and 7.5 km from Nanjing Lukou International Airport. JNDZ has attracted more
than 2000 investment from 42 countries.

Nanjing Chemical Industry Park (CIP)

Overview: Being one of the only two state-level petrochemical industry bases in China, it is
located in the north of Nanjing, on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, and 30 km from the
urban center of Nanjing. Main focus: petro-chemistry, basic organic chemical raw materials,
fine chemicals, macromolecule materials, new chemical materials and life science projects.

Nanjing High and New Technology Industrial Development Zone (NHZ)

Overview: NHZ is a state-level industrial development zone, located near the northern bank of
the Yangtze River. Nanjing New & High-Tech Industry Development Zone takes its advantage
to develop three leading industries—software & electronic information, biological medicine and
new energy and material. The Zone has a planned area of 160 square kilometers and has in it
more than 2000 registered companies, more than 500 foreign-invested enterprises, 12 listed
companies and 48 enterprises whose sales income exceeds 100 million RMB. The Zone is
one of the important economic growth poles in Nanjing and listed in advanced national new
and high-tech industry development zones.

Nanjing Economic & Technological Development Zone

In September 1992, Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone (originally
known as Nanjing Xingang Industrial Zone) was established. In December 2011, NETDZ was
certificated as National Ecological Industry Model Park.

