Paper Topics. Due March 24, 2015.
Write a 1000 word essay on one of the following topics. If you elect to write the long,
2500 word paper on one of these topics, you must bring in an outside source in addition
to the readings for this course. Be sure to follow the paper guidelines as stated at the
philosophy paper link.
1. Aristotle’s Ethics continues the type of analysis he began in his Metaphysics
(especially his discussion of final cause). Compare the themes of the Ethics and
Metaphysics (to the extent that they are comparable) and then extend this discussion
to an elaboration of Aristotle’s ethical theory, showing along the way why, for
Aristotle, only the virtuous person can be happy.
2. Aristotle’s Categories sets forth a theory of abstract ideas or concepts that contrasts
with Plato’s theory of Ideas/Forms. What are the problems with Plato’s theory of
Forms that Aristotle’s theory of categories (and in particular his distinction between
primary and secondary substance) helps to overcome. In the context of this
discussion, be sure to address the arguments of Aristotle’s metaphysics, especially his
theory of potential becoming actual (you can also connect this to his ethical theory if
you want). Be sure to give examples along the way.
3. Spinoza’s philosophy is best understood by beginning with his statement that “God is
Nature.” How does this statement reflect a sharp contrast between Spinoza and
traditional understandings of the relationship between God and Nature. How then
does Spinoza develop this argument in order to establish an ethics for the blessed life?
