Canadian Economy 2203
Assignment # 3
Argumentative / Journalist Report
The economical events that occur in our economy usually has a profound affect on the lives of
Canadians. At times, these events can greatly impact us on federal or provincial level, as well as
a personal level. Throughout the course of Canadian Economy, we have had the opportunity to
discuss and debate various current events that have been informative and some controversial.
Now the time has come for you to discuss a topic of your choice that you feel has impacted the
Canadian economy.
For the purpose of this assignment you are to choose ONE of two styles of writing to
discuss/debate your event.
Journalistic / Expository Report
Journalism is the timely reporting of events at the local, provincial, national and international levels.
Reporting involves the gathering of information through interviewing and research, the results of
which are turned into a fair and balanced story for publication or for television or radio broadcast.
Journalists who are starting their careers normally do not do commentary or opinion pieces. Rather,
they cover hard news stories such as community news, courts, crime and speeches by notable
people.
The purpose of an expository essay is to present, completely and fairly, other people's views or to
report about an event or a situation. Expository writing, or exposition, presents a subject in detail,
apart from criticism, argument, or development. Such writing is discourse designed to convey
information or explain what is difficult to understand. Exposition usually proceeds by the orderly
analysis of parts and the use of familiar illustrations or analogies.
Argumentative Report
The argumentative essay has to take into consideration the fact that the writer is the only one who
has permission to speak; he or she holds the floor, the gavel, and the microphone all at once.
What counts in an argumentative essay, then, is the writer's ability to create a sense of interior
debate, of allowing other voices their say, and maintaining equilibrium among those voices. It's a
matter of fairness and reasonableness. The essay is built around a specific statement (or main
premise) that is debatable within the field in which you are studying. In other words, at the centre
of an argumentative essay is a statement with which your readers may disagree. Your essay will
need to support that statement in a manner that convinces your readers of its truth.
