Grading Policy



60% Major Grades: Tests, Lab Practicals, Major Projects, Interactive Notebook
Assessment and a Collection
20% Daily Grades: Homework and Classroom Activities
20% Quizzes and Labs
Notebooks

Each student will be expected to keep a notebook containing class notes, homework, and
other graded assignments. NOTEBOOKS WILL BE USED IN CLASS DAILY! If you are
absent, I expect you to borrow and copy a classmate’s notes or copy from the “master
notebook” when you return. There will be a notebook assessment each six weeks, so please
stay organized!
Re-testing (see student handbook)





Retests or corrections must be completed within 5 school days after the test and during
tutorial times before or after school. These CANNOT be done during class.
The highest retest grade is a 70; only 2 retests per six weeks; a student must have a
completed test review before retesting.
Makeup tests are not re-testable.
No retesting for Lab Practicals or Collections
Test corrections can serve as a successful retest effort.
Late Work

30 points will automatically be deducted from the grade earned on daily assignments for
being one day late for a maximum score of 70. In addition, late assignments for a unit will
also be accepted up until the day of the unit test or the end of the 6 weeks (whichever
comes first) for a maximum grade of 50.
Absences and Makeup Work





A student has up to 5 days (as determined by teacher) to turn in assignments or make up a
test missed due to absences (see student handbook).
Makeup work is the responsibility of the student and should be discussed before or after
school or before or after class.
You must arrange for your work before going to ISS or school sponsored activity.
Due to their nature, Lab Practicals are not re-testable. An alternate writing assignment will
be given to student absent.
**If a student is absent the day before a test or lab practical, this does NOT excuse them
from testing the day they return.
Review Sheets



Review sheets are given prior to each unit test and semester exam.
Review sheets should be used as a guideline to studying for the test or exam.
If complete, the review sheet will be worth 10 bonus test points. The review sheet is worth
15 bonus points on a semester exam.
Grades

Grades will be posted regularly and it is the student’s responsibility to check Skyward
often! Please turn in missing assignments ASAP if applicable to deadlines.
Extra Credit

Extra credit opportunities will be available every six weeks. Assignments given and point
awards are to be determined by the teacher.
**During the course of the school year, updated clips or segments of science & technology that relate to
the aquatic science curriculum may air on TV (PBS, Discovery Channel). Video list may be obtained upon
request. Information from these segments is often more current than our textbook. From time to time
we may show these clips in accordance to district guidelines and copyright laws.**
