Project Description
The School of Language, Literature and International Studies at the University of Central Lancashire is pleased
to offer a studentship to prospective PhD students to begin in October 2015.
In the UK Government’s recent REF 2014 assessment of research activity, 75% of outputs were judged to be
‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in Modern Languages and Linguistics in the School. Based in
Preston in Lancashire, the School has a number of research hubs, including the Worldwise Centre, the Institute
for Black Atlantic Research, the International Institute of Korean Studies, and the International Institute for
Sign Languages and Deaf Studies.
Under the Worldwise Centre, which conducts research in modern foreign languages, cultures and
communications, applications are invited for a studentship to support tuition fees for up to three years of fulltime study. We welcome research proposals on any area related to the teaching and learning of modern foreign
languages in the school, further or higher education sectors. We have a particular interest in the following or
related fields:





Digital technologies and modern foreign languages
Modern foreign languages and intercultural communication
Communicative pedagogy in modern foreign languages
Government policy on the promotion of modern foreign languages
Researching the impact of national, international or EU-funded projects addressing the strategic role
of modern foreign languages (e.g., Routes into Languages)

Modern foreign language education and employability
Eligible candidates will hold an upper second class honours degree and a Master’s degree. Candidates whose
secondary education has not been conducted in English will need to demonstrate evidence of appropriate
English language proficiency (e.g., 7.0 in IELTS with not less than 6.5 in any of the individual elements).
The deadline for applications is 10th July 2015 at 5pm.
For enquiries or related questions, please contact: Dr Michael Thomas (mthomas4@uclan.ac.uk).
