Over the winter a further 356 projects were added to OASIS. This continues the growth observed over
the last reporting period: averaging 2.56 reports per day compared to the mean of 1.83 observed over
the history of usage in Scotland.
There are now 3993 records in OASIS. The proportion of records at different stages in the work flow
remains constant with minor fluctuations for the number of records at each stage of the process.
Continuing the slightly downward trend from previous reports, 18.91% of projects are live with
contractors (compared with 20.7% for the previous reporting period), 14.75% with the relevant HER
and 4.76 require validation by RCAHMS (figure 1) whilst 61.58% (as opposed to 62.4% for the
preceding period) of projects have been completed.

The proportion of live records remains constant with 49.22% of the records with the contractor,
38.4% with the HERs and 12.4% awaiting validation by RCAHMS compared to 54.82%, 38% 7.15%
split from the preceding reporting period.

Historic Environment Record validation
There has been a marginal increase in the proportion of records requiring HER validation to
14.75% from 14.3% (adjusted from last 14.1%). Generally there is good information flow
from the contractors through the HERs although there are notable exceptions where a backlog
in validating records has built (figure 2 and table 2). This is causing concern with those
submitting their records as it delays the release of the reports through the ArchSearch grey
literature library.

Table 2 presents the numbers of projects at each stage of the OASIS workflow by HER. The table
highlights the percentages of record validated by each HER. The figures have been adjusted from
previous reporting periods to exclude projects which have not been submitted by contractors.

Figure 3 shows the proportion of records at each stage of the OASIS workflow. There is a
disproportionate emphasis on those HERs where there have been a small number of projects reported.
Generally RCAHMS validation is keeping pace with the validation from the HERs although there is
currently a spike in records awaiting validation (reflecting the large number of records validated by
the HERs during April 2015 (Figur4 4).

The figures provided in table 3 include reports working their way through the system but
have not necessarily been signed-off yet.
Training and new users
An information session was held at Guard Archaeology but otherwise there has been no training
undertaken during the period.
Including curators, there are now 96 registered users for OASIS in Scotland – an increase of 9 from
the previous reporting period. At least two of the new users (from academia and the National
Museums Scotland) have registered so that they could submit applications through the radiocarbon
database.
