Applications are invited for an 18-month fixed term appointment within the Royal
Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) in our
Education and Outreach department.
ScotlandsPlaces is a partnership project between RCAHMS, the National Records of
Scotland and the National Library of Scotland. The website brings together various
geographic-based resources from the partner organisations using web services. The
resources include topographical maps and plans, archaeological sites and records, and
historical volumes containing official reports, tax rolls and information about place names.
The purpose of this post is to support and encourage volunteers to transcribe hand
written archive documents on the ScotlandsPlaces website. The post holder will have
responsibility for making the ScotlandsPlaces collection meaningful and relevant to the
project's target audiences by creating and delivering workshops (both in-person and online)
which build participation with the website.
The successful applicant will be expected to have a relevant degree and/or relevant work
experience. Candidates should possess experience of delivering a training and activity
programme to a variety of community audiences, whilst also being able to engage different
audiences using online content and social media. The post holder must have experience with
paleography and archival resources along with experience in recruiting, supporting and
motivating volunteers. A knowledge or interest in Scottish History and related 17th-20th century
archival resources would be desirable. The post will involve travel and periods away from
home, for which expenses are provided.
