Class Description:
An introduction to the basic skills in producing signs and understanding American Sign Language (ASL).
It will include learning fingerspelling and numbers. Students will also learn how to sign basic
conversational signs, culturally appropriate behaviors, and expose students to ASL grammar.
Our class learning goals:
• Students will be able to negotiate a signing environment
• The student will initiate contact and utilize appropriate attention getting strategies.
• Students will generate a culturally appropriate introduction by providing the following:
-First and last name.
-Why he/she is learning sign language.
-Where they are learning sign language.
-Who their teacher is.
• Students will explain what the purpose of name signs are and how they are given.
• Students will express and comprehend core vocabulary related to:
-Introducing yourself
-Exchanging information
-Talking about surroundings
-Telling where you live (City, State, and Country)
-Talking about your family
-Giving apologies
-Expressing opinions
-Suggesting activities
-Numbers zero through 100
• Students will make up their own ASL short stories including basic fingerspelling and numbers learned
in class.

-Negation
-Yes/no questions
-“Wh" questions
-Topic sentence structure
-Personal pronouns
Beginning ASL I
-Facial expression
-Verb pair
-Comparing and contrasting structures
-Time signs/tense
-Classifiers
- Directional verbs
-Number incorporation with pronouns
-Listing techniques
FOOD/DRINKS:
Per instruction by Ms. Bartosh and the assistant principals, no food or water bottles/drinks are allowed in
the classroom.
GRADE PERCENTAGE:
Minor (quizzes, homework, daily work)
35%
Major (tests, projects, contact events)
65%
CONTACT EVENTS:
It is absolutely vital for students to not only be active participants in the classroom but also in the
community ASL is used, so that students may interact with deaf people. Students will be required to
attend (3) contact events in the fall and spring semesters. There will be multiple deaf contact events
throughout the year for students to attend. If there is no possible way for a student to attend with good
reason, there will be supplemental resources available. If there are any questions or concerns, please feel
free to contact me.
TARDIES:
After 3 tardies students will be referred to the principal’s office
(Three tardies = Office Referral/ 1 absence)
LATE WORK:
-If an assignment is not turned in on the assigned date and time, it is late.
-Late assignments: 10 points off per day---after 3 days 70% is the highest possible grade
MAKE-UP WORK:
-If you were absent when an assignment/test was given, you must adhere to the 1-1 make up
policy.
-Students must make arrangements to take make-up tests during tutorials—before or after school.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
-Backpacks, purses, books, etc. should be placed under chair.
-ASL is a visual language, no note taking unless otherwise instructed.
-The class is dismissed by the teacher, NOT the bell.
-As per TMHS policy cell phones, laptops, iPads, iPods, head-phones, ear-buds, mp3 players are
not to be used or displayed in the classroom
-At the end of each class, students will place their composition books on the period assigned shelf
