Time and Location to Report on Day 1:
At least one week prior to starting your rotation the student will need
to email Dr. Brownlee to determine if the student will be starting on the
inpatient consult service or in the Peds ID Clinic

learners in on the Ped ID service at the time)
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the Pediatric ID rotation students will:
o Demonstrate the ability to take a medical history and perform a complete physical exam
relevant to the infectious or immunologic problem at hand.
o Demonstrate the ability to summarize their findings in a concise but complete fashion and
develop a plan of action.
o Understand basic microbiology procedures and interpretation of antibiotic resistance profiles.
o Understand the role that antibiotic stewardship plays controlling the development of resistant
organisms and in controlling healthcare costs.
o Be able to select appropriate antibiotics for common pediatric infections.
o Understand how immune function and pathogen specific factors lead to the development of
infectious diseases.
o Understand the role a consultant plays in both inpatient and outpatient models of pediatric
medicine.
o Demonstrate the ability to use evidence based guidelines and primary resources to answer
medical questions.
Course Description:
Students will participate in care of children with a wide range of infectious disease processes in both
inpatient and outpatient setting. Students will participate in direct patient care and one-on-one
instruction. Students will prepare a short presentation focused on answering a specific clinical question
using primary literature sources.
