Controlling Idea/ Literary Element Assignment
Directions: Respond to both parts on loose leaf in pen or type your responses.
Part I:
Write a well-developed paragraph in which you use ideas from at least TWO of
the following pieces of literature to establish a controlling idea about romantic
relationships (“Eternity” by William Blake, “Woman” by Nikki Giovanni, or “The
Wooing of Ariadne” by Harry Mark Petrakis). Develop your controlling idea
using specific details and examples from each piece of literature that you choose.
Assignments should:
 Present a well-developed paragraph
 Demonstrate a basic understanding of the texts
 Establish an appropriate controlling idea
 Support the controlling idea with clear and appropriate details from both texts
 Use language that is appropriate
 (may) exhibit errors in conventions that do not hinder comprehension
Part II:
Choose a specific literary element or technique (e.g., theme, characterization,
symbolism, figurative language, etc.) used by one of the authors. Using specific
details from that piece of literature, in a well-developed paragraph, show how
the author uses that element or technique to develop their piece of literature.
Assignments should:
 Present a well-developed paragraph
 Provide an appropriate explanation of the literary element or technique chosen
 Support the explanation with clear and appropriate evidence from the text
 Use language that is appropriate
 (may) exhibit errors in conventions that do not hinder comprehension
Follow all directions and meet all criteria for full credit on both assignments.
