Annex 1: Call for applications
Under the British Council Researcher Links scheme we will be holding a workshop
on the theme “Dealing with Land Destitution and Structural Inequalities in
Transitions” between 25 and 28 of February 2015 at Javeriana University (Bogota).
The workshop is being coordinated by Dr. Clara Sandoval, Founding member of the
Essex Transitional Justice Network/School of Law at the University of Essex and
Professor Roberto Vidal, Director of Pensar Institute at Javeriana University; and will
have contributions from other leading researchers: Professor Rory O’Connell,
Director of the Transitional Justice Institute at Ulster University; Professor Aoife
Nolan, University of Nottingham; Professor Vanessa Suelt, Javeriana University;
Professor Camilo Sanchez, De-Justicia and National University and Professor
Sabine Michalowski, Essex University.
We are now inviting Early Career Researchers from the UK and Colombia to apply to
attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the
Researcher Links programme. The application form, with more details on the
initiative, is attached and should be sent to etjnfr01@essex.ac.uk before the

AND
Bogota – Javeriana University, 25 to 28 February 2015
The British Council Researcher Links, the Essex Transitional Justice Network at the
University of Essex and the Instituto Pensar at Javeriana University welcome
applications from early career researchers in the UK and in Colombia working on
areas related to land destitution and structural inequalities in the context of
transitional justice processes to attend an intensive 3 and a half day workshop (25 to
28 February 2015).
The workshop aims to build research links for long-term collaboration between
leading/established researchers and early career researchers in the UK and
Colombia to facilitate research on whether transitional justice mechanisms, in
1
particular reparations and guarantees of non-repetition, can contribute or offer
special opportunities for addressing the links between land destitution, poverty, and
structural inequalities and if so how best to use that potential. The workshop also
aims to provide early career researchers with an opportunity to enhance their
research and networking skills.
Leading international scholars will act as mentors during the workshop. They include:
Professor Rory O’Connell, Director of the Transitional Justice Institute at Ulster
University; Professor Aoife Nolan, University of Nottingham; Professor Roberto Vidal,
Director of Pensar Institute at Javeriana University; Professor Vanessa Suelt,
Javeriana University; Professor Camilo Sanchez, De-Justicia and National
University, Dr. Clara Sandoval, Founding member of the Essex Transitional Justice
Network/School of Law at the University of Essex and Professor Sabine
Michalowski, from the School of Law and Director of the Essex Transitional Justice
Network at the University of Essex.
What is the British Council Researcher Links?
The British Council has launched a new five-year programme to encourage
international research collaboration between ambitious early career researchers from
the UK and eighteen countries around the world, one of them Colombia.
The programme, ‘British Council Researcher Links’ provides opportunities for early
career researchers from the UK and internationally to interact, learn from each other
and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations.
As part of this programme, a ‘call to action’ was issued in June 2013 for leading
researchers to propose themes for bilateral workshops to be held in one of these
countries which will bring together early career researchers to discuss their research
and start to build international relationships.
Successful applicant organisations from the UK and add country name are now
recruiting early career researchers and welcome applications to attend the above
workshop.
The workshops will provide a unique opportunity for sharing research expertise and
networking. During the workshops early career researchers will have the opportunity
to share their research and discuss this with established researchers from the UK
and partner countries. There will be a focus on building up links for future
collaborations and participants selected on the basis of their research potential and
ability to build longer term links.
2
What the programme funds:
The British Council will cover the following costs for each of the 20 UK and 20
Colombian early career researchers selected to attend the workshop.



Transport costs in economy class (domestic and international flights, and
visas as applicable. Participants are responsible for making the necessary
arrangements to secure a visa).
Hotel for 4 nights including breakfast (for the 3 and half days of the workshop)
3 meals per day
The British Council does not cover a travel insurance. Each participant is advised to
purchase one.
The workshop will take place at Javeriana University in Bogota (Colombia) between
25 and 28 February 2015.
Why should I apply?
The workshop will bring together early career researchers from the UK and
Colombia, with different disciplinary backgrounds (such as law, economics, political
sciences, sociology, etc) working on this area to enable them to
1) share and receive peer and senior researchers feedback on their research;
2) receive feedback from leading/established researchers and their peers on the
workshop theme and their professional development;
3) contribute to a collaborative research agenda for future work on the workshop
themes;
4) receive advice from senior researchers on possible funding sources and on how
to write successful research grant applications on the themes of the workshop and
beyond;
5) establish a new international network on land and transitional justice;
6) benefit from the experience of leading international scholars in carrying out
multidisciplinary research and identifying and developing research questions; and
7) produce papers the best of which will be selected for publication in a special
issue of a peer-review journal after a mentoring process.
3
Who is eligible to apply?
Participants must be early career researchers: Early Career Researchers are defined
as holding a PhD (or having equivalent research experience) and having up to 10
years post-PhD research experience. They are equivalent to the ‘Recognised
Researcher’ and sometimes ‘Experienced Researcher’ categories in the EU
framework
for
researchers’
careers.
