Classics Italy Trip - October 2016

advertisement
1st September 2015
Dear Parent/ Guardian
The Classics Department is organising its next popular short tour of the classical sites of Rome and the Bay of Naples,
Italy in October 2016. The trip goes out to Italy on the last day of school just before the October half term and
returns on the first Sunday of half term. Students will then have a week of half term left to recover! We shall spend
one night in Rome and after that we shall be based in the Sorrento area of the Bay of Naples. The tour will last 5 days
and will follow a busy schedule:
Dates: Wednesday 19th October 2016 - to Sunday 23rd October 2016.
Cost: £730
This includes:
coach transfers in the UK;
return flight London/Italy; own passport required;
half-board accommodation in Rome and Piano di Sorrento in 3/4 bedded rooms
with bath/shower;
all transport within Italy by coach and local train;
entry into all sites and museums;
emergency fund including flight contingency amount as requested by the travel
company. Depending on flight prices the final price may well go down.
but excludes the cost of soft drinks and light lunch each day
Proposed programme:
The tour is designed for those with an interest in Roman life and culture. After arriving in Rome, we will start our
tour immediately by visiting the spectacular Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli. In the evening we will walk to Romes’s Trevi
Fountain. The following day before setting off for the Bay of Naples we shall visit the Colosseum and the Roman
Forum and Palatine Hill. We then transfer by coach to Piano di Sorrento in the Bay of Naples, and visit the
Catacombs of San Sebastiano as we leave Rome. Once based in Sorrento we shall spend a day in Pompeii
exploring the extensive ruins of the town and the Villa of Mysteries. We shall also visit the Roman town of
Herculaneum which is smaller than Pompeii but in many ways just as impressive. We plan to visit the new Virtual
Reality Museum at Herculaneum. The remains of the royal villa at Oplontis are also on the itinerary. We shall go to
the summit of Mount Vesuvius (please note that this will involve a fairly steep walk on rough ash). On the final day
we will visit Cumae and Naples Archaeological Museum before our flight back to the UK.
This busy and highly enjoyable trip is open to all interested students in years 9 to 12 who wish to apply. In the rare
event of over-subscription for this trip, priority will be given to those students who are currently studying classical
subjects as well as those who plan to be studying Classical subjects in 2016. Please don’t let this put you off applying
as we always take non-Classicists who have a genuine interest in the tour.
As you can see from the proposed programme, we work hard to see as much as possible while we have the
opportunity, so please do not apply if you want a trip that is only sunbathing and shopping and you hate walking!
If you wish to have a place on this tour for your son/daughter, please complete the reply slip and return it, with a
deposit of £80 to the Student Office in Barham or directly to Mrs Fairey by Wednesday 30th September 2015.
Cheques should be made payable to Cranbrook School Voluntary Fund.
Please note that these deposits are not refundable once the booking has been made with the tour operator, unless a
replacement can be found. The £650 remainder of the cost must be made by June 30th 2016. I can arrange
payment by instalments over 9 months if you find this more convenient. Please indicate your chosen method of
payment on the return slip.
I expect all parents of participants, or their representatives, to attend an information evening together with the
students prior to the trip. This will be held sometime in September 2016. This evening is very useful for parents,
students and teachers alike.
I would like as much essential information as possible from you on your application form for the trip. If there is
anything you cannot provide me with, please indicate this where relevant. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Yours sincerely
Mrs D Fairey, Head of Classics
