pmille10@umd.edu.
SAT Review for Juniors – Feb 18 & Feb 25: Are you taking the SAT this semester? If so, Pre-College
Programs encourages you to participate in SAT Review to help prepare for the test. The focus for the
February 18 session will be SAT Math, while the February 25 session will target the SAT Verbal section.
This review is FREE and a great way to get ready for the March, May, or June tests.
Juniors: If you plan to attend on Feb 18 and/or Feb 25, please notify your counselor! This will help us
prepare enough materials for each review session.
SGA Fundraiser – Joe Corbi’s Catalogues Distributed this Saturday! Our spring SGA fundraiser begins
this Saturday! Sell Joe Corbi's items, participate in an upcoming bowling activity here on campus, and help
us raise funds for the summer! More information will be given at General Assembly!
Ms. Buford’s Students – Report to Tutoring Center Feb 18: Ms. Buford will be absent this Saturday. If
you are assigned to one of her Spanish periods, please report to the Tutoring Center (West Education
Annex) at the start of that period. Bring school assignments/homework to work on during that time.
Testing for New Students – Feb 25: Each year, Pre-College Programs’ students complete a set of
counseling assessments as part of their participation in our program. New students will complete these
assessments on Saturday, February 25. (Each counselor will review the names of students who need to test
in Counseling Seminar.) The testing session will be from 1:45-3:00 p.m., and lunch will be provided.
Please mark your calendars!
Spring College Tour – April 3-5: Pre-College Programs is sponsoring a college tour to Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, and New York. The college tour will take place during MCPS/PGCPS Spring Break, and is open to
juniors only. As part of this trip, juniors will have the chance to visit the following schools: University of
Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Swarthmore College, Seton Hall University, and either New York
University or Columbia University.
The LIFT program is sponsoring the Spring College Tour. Therefore, this trip is not only open to Upward
Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science juniors; it is also open to 11th grade students who are not in
UB/UBMS but are interested in attending. A flyer with additional details will be posted on the Pre-College
Programs’ website later this month. In the interim, if you have questions about the Spring College Tour,
please contact Mr. Miller, Assistant Director, at 301-405-6776 or pmille10@umd.edu.
Summer 2012 Program Dates – June 17-July 27: Pre-College Programs announces our dates for the
summer residential program! Students will move into the residence halls on Sunday, June 17. The last
day for the summer program will be Friday, July 27. Please mark these dates on your calendar! More
information about the summer program and participation forms will be available soon.
Parent Association General Meeting – Feb 18, 11:00 a.m.: All parents are welcome and encouraged to
attend. Come and hear updates on 501c3 status, spring fundraisers, scholarships, and other exciting
activities and events designed to support Pre-College Programs’ students and families. Participation in this
meeting is also a great way to earn service hours. (A total of 20 service hours is due in May).
Parent Association Fundraiser – Krispy Kreme Donuts & Coffee: The Parent Association is sponsoring a
fundraiser, and they need your support! Krispy Kreme Donuts and Coffee will be sold to raise money for
student activities. Order forms will be available this Saturday at the Parent Association Meeting and at
General Assembly. Forms and payment will be due March 3, and distribution will take place in the West
Education Annex on March 10. For more information about this fundraiser, contact Ms. Miles, Chair of
Fundraising Committee, at 240-765-8862 or lmiles@students.pgcc.edu.
Parent Association – Filing for 501c3 Status – Donations Needed! The Parent Association is working hard
to support the needs of our students and families, and as part of that effort, the association voted to apply
Main office telephone – 301-405-6776
www.precollege.umd.edu
for 501(c)(3) status. Obtaining this status would allow the Parent Association to operate as a non-profit
organization on a tax-exempt basis.
The Parent Association is asking that each parent kindly contribute $10 to put towards the filing fee.
Parents can turn in their contribution on Saturdays at the West Education Annex. A CAE committee
member will be available to accept your contribution and provide you with a receipt. For more information
regarding this effort, contact Mr. C. Maduka, Chair of the Communication, Advocacy, and Education
Committee, at 301-773-2629 or chykemaduka@msn.com.
Parent Association: Saturday Volunteer Call Center Contacts: The Program Support Committee has set up
a system to organize parent service on Saturdays. Parents who wish to provide hall monitoring or office
support during Saturday Academy must sign up in advance by contacting the parent call center.
The parent call center for February 18 will be monitored by Ms. Cheryl Gray. She can be reached at
301.633.8617. Parents who would like to hall monitor or provide office support on February 18 must preregister by calling Ms. Gray. Parents must then check in at the West Education Annex for assignment
instructions on February 18 by 9:00 a.m.
Parents who would like to sign up for February 25 can contact Ms. Washington at 301-980-0466.
Parents who would like to sign up for March 3 can contact Ms. Murray at 301-350-3199.
Parent Association Committee – Get Involved in Parent Service: The Parent Association has developed
four committees for the 2011-2012 academic year. Each committee needs parent support; even if you
cannot attend every meeting, your assistance can be utilized.
The majority of parent service opportunities will be available through the committees. Parent service hours
will be earned through committee-sponsored activities and monitored by the chairs of each committee.
Each week, the Program Support Committee will record service hours on a master list.

The FAFSA is now available! Have your parents filed their taxes? If not, encourage your parents to do this
ASAP. If there is a delay completing the 2011 1040 tax return, the FAFSA can be filed with estimated tax
information to avoid missing state and institutional deadlines. For more information on the FAFSA, visit
www.fafsa.ed.gov. For information about College Goal Sunday (free events where students/parents can get
professional assistance to file the FAFSA), visit www.collegegoalsundaymd.org.
Watch the mail for “early action” or “priority” results. If you receive acceptances, YAY! Be sure to read
materials thoroughly and note the deadline for confirmation and deposit. If you receive rejection letters, do
not take it personally. Re-evaluate your college list, and maintain a positive attitude about your college
prospects. Talk with your parent and counselor who can help you look at other options.
Continue to search and apply for scholarships.
Avoid catching the very contagious illness called SENIORITIS! Stay focused as you begin your final
semester of high school!

Begin second semester with a positive attitude and solid work habits. Seek assistance with challenging
courses. Remember, the grades that you earn this year will be the last set of grades reported on the transcript
that is submitted with your college application. Make this semester count!
Continue researching colleges. Also, research scholarships that you are (or will be) eligible to apply to. The
more information you find now, the better prepared you will be for senior year.
Begin thinking about summer plans. The Pre-College Programs’ summer residential program will help you
prepare for college by allowing you time and guidance to work on college applications. Summer
employment, internships, and/or community service work are also great ways to spend your last summer of
high school.
