1. Welcome note
Inaugural Symposium - Shandong University-Helmholtz Institute of Biotechnology
We warmly welcome you to the inaugural symposium of the Shandong University Helmholtz Joint
Institute of Biotechnology (SHIB) in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China.
Infectious diseases remain a threat to public health in developed and developing countries.
Bacterial and viral pathogens have the capacity to adapt to environmental changes and acquire
resistance to therapies developed during the last century. Drug resistance threatens the usefulness
of these important medicines. A large number of infectious diseases still lack an appropriate
therapeutic solution despite their large unmet medical need.
SHIB will be dedicated to the research and development of novel anti-infectives to face this
challenge by creating synergies between the founding partners in Germany and China and by
identifying and developing novel avenues of anti-infective therapy.
The Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific research organization, totaling 36,000
staff in 18 research centers working in the fields of Aeronautics, Space and Transport, Earth and
Environment, Energy, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter and Health. The Helmholtz Center for
Infection Research (HZI) is headquartered in Braunschweig and regroups four research centers
including the Helmholtz Center for Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS).
A long-standing scientific collaboration between HIPS and Shandong University State Key Laboratory
for Microbial Technology has built a solid foundation for this joint research institute.
Shandong University is a key comprehensive university in China with a long history which started
in 1864 with the establishment of its medical school. Shandong University comprises 8 campuses in
Shandong province including the Jinan Central Campus and the Qingdao Campus. Shandong University
has developed first-class research and education capabilities in the fields of liberal arts, science,
engineering and medicine, including the State Key Laboratory for Microbial Technology.
Shandong University is strongly committed to foster innovation-focused research collaborations
between Germany and China by creating a Qingdao-based, Sino-German college focusing on key
domains in science &technology that are of importance for development of society: energy,
environment, information technology and biomedical research. SHIB is the first dedicated research
institute of the Sino-German college.
The inaugural symposium of the Shandong University Helmholtz Institute of Biotechnology
celebrates the start of this collaboration and represents the start of mutually beneficial scientific
collaborations between the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and Shandong University.
We welcome you to the wonderful city of Qingdao!
