Benchmark:
SS.8.A.2.7- Describe the contributions of key groups (Africans, Native Americans, women, and children)
to the society and culture of colonial America.
Florida Standards:
LAFS.8.W.3.7- Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated
question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow
for multiple avenues of exploration.
LAFS.8.W.3.8- Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms
effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and
conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

What was life like for minorities living in the thirteen colonies?
What values and beliefs were important to the American colonists?
Lesson Summary
In this lesson, students will demonstrate their newly gained knowledge of the various contributions
made by Native Americans, Africans, women and children to colonial America. The students will have to
research either a minority group or an individual within a certain group and using Prezi, present to the
class information about contributions made by their subject to colonial America.
Process
Step 1: Create Groups and Conduct Research
1. Form groups of 3 or 4 students to create a Prezi presentation on a minority group (Native
Americans, Africans, women or children) or an individual from one of those groups that
contributed to colonial society.

2. Upon deciding what minority group or individual the group is going to focus on, the work will be
divided amongst the group members. The group will need to fill out the student assignment
form and identify what each student will be responsible for. The students final presentation will
be divided into four parts:




Role of minority group or individual in colonial society
Daily life in the colonies
Cultural identity
Contributions to colonial society
3. Explain to the students that they will need research the following information:




Explain the role of the minority group or individual within colonial society.
How was daily life in the colonies for the minority group or individual?
What are some daily challenges the minority group or individual faced?
Cultural Identity of the minority group or individual:

-Religion
-Work
-Leisure activities
What are some traditions that this minority group or individual has that have helped
shape American customs, culture and values today?
How did the minority group or individual impact colonial society?
What lasting affects did the minority group or individual leave on America?
Note: all questions should be answered by the Prezi presentation
4. Have the students use the following resources to conduct research on their minority
group or individual. They may use other sources but must cite all sources on their final
presentation.

Step 2: Creating and Sharing Your Prezi Presentation
1. Instruct students on the parameters of their Prezi presentation, the information and
pictures. Presentation must be divided into Four parts:
 Role of minority group or individual in colonial society
 Daily life in the colonies
 Cultural identity
 Contributions to colonial society
2. You must include at least three images for every section.
3. All questions from STEP 1 are to be answered by your presentation.
4. Once the students have gathered the information needed for the Prezi the group will work
on the presentation together.

Making a Prezi Account
1. Click "Sign Up" in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
2. Fill out the form, making sure to agree with the terms of use, and click "Register
and Continue".
3. Welcome to Prezi! You should arrive at this welcome screen. Choose to watch a
video, view other people's Prezi creations, or create a new Prezi.
Creating a Prezi
1. If you are starting from the welcome screen, click start.
2. If you are starting from your page, click "New Prezi".

Select a style, name your Prezi, and write a description of it.
Click "Create".
Click "Open Me".
Click "Open Me" again.
At this point begin entering your images, texts, media etc.
Step 3: Presentation and Evaluation
1. Upon putting together the Prezi presentation each group member must be knowledgeable on
their assigned area. Each group must practice their presentation and be ready to present to the
information to the class. All group members must participate in the presentation.
2. Once your presentation is complete each member must complete a self-assessment. See Prezi
rubric for project expectations.
