Plasma Diagnostics and Plasma System Design
Subject Area
Title of the Project
Plasma diagnostics and engineering of a novel
plasma based technology
Project Description (max 300 words)
The PlasmaGrain project will develop and understand a novel plasma based technology for cereal
grain preservation as an environmentally friendly alternative to fumigants and pesticides. This
project will elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of action for non- thermal plasma technology.
1. Please indicate the student requirements for this project:
Physics study of Bio-system Interactions with Cold Plasma
The successful applicant will work in the laboratory to develop a new cold plasma system that will
be used for bio-system activation. The part of the PhD study will be also electrical and optical
plasma diagnostics. Applicants for this position should possess an honours degree at 2.1 level or
above in Physics, Applied Physics or Electrical Engineering area. Applicants should have a
demonstrable knowledge of optical spectroscopy, atomic and molecular physics, electrical circuit
design and programming languages. Applicants should also possess a good working knowledge of
laboratory procedures have an interest in characterisation and optimisation of a plasma system.
