Abstract
A variety of techniques must be utilized when creating a website. The product, issue or cause,
being promoted via a website can also aid to challenges. Web design must be accurate, to the
point and follow certain guidelines. According to Carroll (2010), the areas previously
mentioned, are quintessential to the message being delivered. Carroll (2010), also talks about
rules related to fonts, headers, and hyperlinks. Carroll (2010), discusses the value of good
writing. Web design is different from print media. Constant editing and review is mandatory,
when creating online medium. The adage “the simpler the better” is the best way to develop a
site. Understanding that the website information can be seen by anyone around the world, is a
main reason for both accuracy and simplicity. Barrier related to language and culture may skew
the message so the designer must take many factors into account.

Creating a proper website can be difficult. Carroll (2010), discusses in various
chapters, elements like time, font, and screen size that must be taken into account
when writing online. Writing also must be universal and able to be free standing.
Carroll (2010), refers to this when he states, “One the web, any one page is potentially
an island. In fact, visitors might arrive on any page within a set, before seeing any other
part of the site” (p 58). He also discusses that the web spans several time zones. The
global effect the web has means that simple is usually better. Cross-culturally speaking,
nuances could be confusing, therefore causing avoidance of the website.
Reasons to be thorough
The legitimacy of claims is another aspect that web designers must take in
consideration. Today’s web designers must be able to work in multiple arenas, to get
an online message out. Carroll (2010), points out the need for web designers to be
good spellers, editors and strong writers too. A jack of all trades approach is the
difference between designing layout for the web and print. Carroll (2010) discusses
Gestalt’s theory. According to Carroll, Gestalt said, “….the whole is different from the
sum of its parts. To ensure the quality of the whole online, we have to inspect and
evaluate all of the parts” (119). The reference holds value when designing for the web.
Reasons to be Thorough
A web developer must take many factors into consideration. Defining style,
purpose, and structure are only some things that a web developer must be cognizant.
Opposed to print layout where different people handle various aspects, online web
developers must be able to address, revise and check the functionality of every aspect

of the web page. Making sure the web page works through various types of hardware.
Cellphones, tablets, laptops and Desktops may display the same information, in
different ways (Carroll, 2010).
Understanding the message
So many web page styles, hardware types, and preferences can cause the
message to get lost or misunderstood. Choosing a style format (Chicago, MLA or APA)
is helpful because it sets a series of rules for the developer to follow. The variety of
devices that display the message can also alter the message’s look. Screen size from
cellphone to desktop vary. Web designers must be conscious of the variations and

2010). Understanding the message online, starts with making sure that message is
properly developed. Editing, proofreading, and keeping it simple are the best ways to

communication page. Comparing Younger to its rivals and presenting the look of the
item, gives another side of the product. Earlier stated, Younger’s goal is to reach
beyond the target audience. Taking an active online approach is a tactic that draws
users to the product. Positioned properly, Younger, quickly takes the top spot. Strong
writing, editing and proofing of content, are basic components in developing an online
message (Carroll, 2010). The JC Group wants Youngers message heard.
