ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
English I
Prerequisite: None
Grade level: 9-12
Credit: 1
English I is a fusion of composition, literature, language, and reading designed to further skills in
these areas. Composition instruction stresses the process approach. Literature instruction
includes short fiction works, poetry, drama, nonfiction, and novels. Language study includes
grammar, usage, and vocabulary development.
English II
Prerequisite: English I
Grade level: 10-12
Credit: 1
English II continues to stress the coordination of literature, composition, language, and reading.
Writing instruction will focus on compositions on current events and literature. Students will
read short stories, essays, poetry, novellas, novels, and drama. With an emphasis on the criteria
needed to judge the worth of a piece of literature. Language study will emphasize grammar,
usage, style, and vocabulary development.
English III
Prerequisite: English II
Grade level: 11-12
Credit: 1
English III is a fusion of composition, literature, language, and reading designed to further skills
in these areas. Literature instruction will focus on American works and authors in all the genres.
The student will be taught the process of initiating a research project, doing the actual research
and preparing a typed, documented paper. Students will review and practice skills tested on the
SAT and ACT.
English IV
Prerequisite: English III
Grade level: 12
Credit: 1
English IV includes a chronological study of the history of the English language and British
literature. Students will write a documented paper using a variety of purpose with emphasis on
structure, style, and addressing a specific audience. Students will review and practice skills tested
on the ACT and SAT.
Pre-AP English I *
Prerequisite:
Grade level: 9
Credit: 1
In Pre-AP English I students practice all forms of writing. An emphasis is placed on organizing
logical arguments with clearly expressed related definitions, theses, and evidence. Students
write to persuade and to report and describe. English I students read extensively in multiple
genres from world literature such as reading selected stories, dramas, novels, and poetry
originally written in English or translated to English from oriental, classical Greek, European,
African, South American, and North American cultures.
Pre-AP English II *

Pre-AP English II is a fusion of literature, language, writing, and reading designed to further the
skills in these areas. Emphasis will be placed on creating a writing style through skillful
manipulations of sentence patterns and diction. Documentation procedures will be taught.
Techniques of logic and persuasion will be analyzed to aid the students at becoming adept in
critical thinking. Literature study will reflect all genres. Skills needed to be successful in the
analysis of writing about literature will be introduced. Language study will emphasize grammar,
usage, style, and vocabulary development.
AP English III *
Prerequisite:
Grade level: 11
Credit: 1
AP English III analyzes the influences, traditions, authors, and major works of American
Literature. The student will be provided opportunities to recognize concepts of literature and to
interpret and create their own styles of writing. Writing instruction will include persuasive
essays, literary analysis, and documented papers culminating in formal, typed manuscripts.
Literature study will reflect all the genres. Language study will emphasize style. Skills needed to
be successful in the analysis of and writing about literature, will be emphasized. Students will
review and practice skills tested on the SAT and ACT.
AP English IV *
Prerequisite:
Grade level: 12
Credit: 1
AP English IV includes a chronological study of British literature and history with emphasis on
composition. Writing instruction will include literary analysis and criticism, and documented
papers culminating in formal, typed manuscripts. Student will review and practice skills tested
on the SAT and ACT.
College English 101 (Dual Enrollment)
Prerequisite: English I, II, III, SAT or ACT
Grade level: 12
Credit: 1
This course is based on the premise that reading and writing are interactive processes and that
these processes involve preparation and review. In this class the student will read, think about
and discuss what has been read; then write, and discuss and revise. In each of the writing
assignments (which will focus on language as a topic) the student will apply writing as a process
that produces a clear, well-edited product that communicates a specific purpose to a specific
audience. Successful completion of this class will afford the student 3 college semester hours.
Fee required – limited scholarships available based on financial need.
College English 102 (Dual Enrollment)
Prerequisite: College English 101
Grade level: 12
Credit: 1
This course provides students with advanced training in communication skills emphasizing the
writing and reading of argumentative prose and adapting writing to alternate audiences. Students
will write weekly, including such texts as journals, reading response logs, summaries of
argumentative texts, argumentative papers, and longer papers integrating secondary research.
Activities include close reading of sample texts, both student and professional. Some sections
will emphasize special topics in both reading and writing. Successful completion of this class
will afford the student 3 college semester hours. Fee required – limited scholarships available
based on financial need.
Communication Applications
Prerequisite: None
Grade level: 9-12
Credit: 1/2
Students enrolled in Communication Applications will be expected to identify, analyze, develop,
and evaluate communication skills needed for professional and social success in interpersonal
situations, group interactions, and personal and professional presentations. (Required for
graduation)
JOURNALISM
Journalism
Prerequisite: Teacher Approval
Grade level: 10-12
Credit: 1
Students study and apply the journalistic skills and processes necessary to produce newspaper
articles. They develop skills in news judgment, fact gathering, photography, writing headlines
and captions, graphic design and layout, proofing, editing, basic publication management skills
and creative writing.
