To enable students to reach professional standards of accuracy and presentation in consecutive and liaison interpreting, and to familiarise students with the simultaneous mode of interpreting

1) Language specific practice seminars fortnightly (3h/w) to combine conference and liaison interpreting, alternate language combination in alternate weeks in weeks 2.1 to 2.11 (no teaching
in week 2.7). Students studying on the MA (Hons) BSL (Interpreting and Applied Language Studies) programme will attend BSL specific interpreting seminars in all weeks (yet no teaching in
week 2.7).
a) Conference Interpreting
Consecutive interpreting
Practice focussing on advanced skills/subskills including concentration/memory exercises; analysis; visualisation, paraphrasing; summarising; development of
analytical note-taking system; structure and linkage; delivery and presentation
Simultaneous interpreting
Review of basic skills; concentration/ memory exercises; analysis; anticipation; abstracting; chunking; multi-tasking
Classes may include the following activities: introduction to the speech situation, consideration of specialised terminology, actual interpretation, group feedback &
discussion. Individual feedback may also be provided.
b) Liaison Interpreting
Various types of speech/sign exchange: the question-and-answer session, the interview, the negotiation and the debate. Staged dialogues are prepared and ‘acted out’ by the tutor and
one of the students or a language assistant as interlocutors. Preparation takes place on the basis of background material and information about
the interlocutors and context. Students receive feedback on performance in the form of diagnostic comments.
2) Students (all language combinations) participate in 3 hour mini-conferences three times per semester and in the MultiLingual Debate
