Light Energy Study Guide
On Thursday, December 16, students will take their test over Forms of Energy.
The students may use the following to help them study: 1.) study guide, 2.) journals, 3.) Science book pp. 283-290 4.)
our website. Students do not have to use all the resources listed. The parent/guardian signature is required indicating that
you have helped your child review for the test. Your child will receive a homework grade for the completion of the study
guide. This sheet is due test day. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Standards covered on test:
SPI 0407.10.2 Determine which surfaces reflect, refract, or absorb light.
SPI 0407.10.3 Determine whether a material is transparent, translucent, or opaque.
*********************************************************************************************************************************
__________1. Reflection
*Reflection: When light bounces off an object (like our mirror experiment).
*A boy sees himself in a calm pond because of the reflectiveness.
__________2. Refraction
*Refraction: The bending of light as it passes from one material to another (like the straws in the water
experiment).
*A prism is a piece of glass that refracts light into different colors.
*The light on a prism is being refracted.
__________3. Absorption
*Absorption: When light that hits an object is taken in by the object (like our egg experiment)
*Black objects absorb the most light.
*Examples: a black shirt absorbs all the light.
__________4. Transparent
*Transparent: objects that allow light to pass through them.
*Examples: glass, clear plastic wrap, glass jar, glass window
___________5. Translucent
*Translucent: objects let light pass through them but scatter the light. You cannot see clearly through
transparent objects for this reason.
*Examples: was paper and frosted glass.
__________6. Opaque
*Opaque: objects block the light from passing through them.
*Examples: brick wall and card board, black squares hiding flowers, metal can (like a vegetable can), wooden
door
___________7. Investigation
The Ringgold students want to investigate: “How light travels and is influenced by different types of materials
and surfaces.”
A. Describe the investigation using complete sentences and your academic vocabulary.
B. The students choose six object to investigate: 1. tennis shoe, 2. water, 3. tape, 4. plastic, 5. glass of water, 6.
paper.
You will place an X to show which physical properties apply to each object of the six objects: are the
translucent, transparent, opaque, do they absorb light , do they reflect light , do they refract light?
