ADOLESCENT DAY TREATMENT
The Child and Family Institute at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s is offering a psychology
externship experience for doctoral students in its Comprehensive Adolescent
Rehabilitation and Education Service (CARES). CARES is a collaboration of the New York
City Department of Education and the Hospital Center. It provides high school students
suffering from psychiatric difficulties and/or substance abuse issues with the
opportunity to work toward a Regents or General Equivalency diploma while receiving
intensive group and individual psychotherapy, as well as psychopharmacological
treatment. CARES' therapeutic framework is based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy
(DBT) and the Transtheoretical Model for Change. Externs are exposed to utilizing DBT
and substance abuse treatment in a fast-paced but highly supportive milieu
setting. Trainees participate in all aspects of the therapeutic community, carry
individual cases and co-lead groups. They attend intensive summer orientation training,
Grand Rounds lectures, weekly individual supervision and group supervision. A
commitment of at least twenty hours per week is required. Positions will begin on July 1
and end on June 30. Applicants from school and clinical psychology doctoral programs
(Psy.D. or Ph.D.) are welcome to apply. Prior hospital-based clinical experience is
strongly preferred. This externship is ideal for an advanced student.
All externs will take part in all the above activities. In addition, each extern will
participate in one elective component throughout the entire year. Applicants are
requested to apply to one of two tracks representing their preference (2 externs will be
selected for each of the tracks):
1. Testing Track: In this track externs will administer full batteries of psychological
testing and write testing reports under the supervision of licensed psychologists.
Applicants for this track are expected to have past experience with testing and
are required to submit one full deidentified psychological testing report as part
of their applications materials.
2. Intake Track: in this track externs will conduct, write up, and present
comprehensive psychiatric intake evaluations for patients applying to the CARES
program under the supervision of licensed psychologists. No writing sample is
required as part of the application.
Applicants can only apply to one of the two tracks. Please indicate the track to which
you are applying in your application email.

a psychology externship experience in the outpatient department for two doctoral
students. This multi-disciplinary clinic provides intake evaluations,
psychopharmacological treatment, psychological testing, individual, family and group

families. Patients come to CFI seeking treatment for a wide range of psychosocial
difficulties, psychiatric diagnoses and severity of illnesses. Externs carry five to six
therapy cases (individual or family) and may have the opportunity to co-lead a group
with a staff member. Two hours of individual supervision, with a licensed staff member
and a post-doctoral psychology fellow, are provided weekly, and externs participate in a
biweekly multidisciplinary team meeting. In addition, externs attend a weekly extern
group run by the externship director which focuses on process and professional
development and also includes case conferences, as well as didactics taught by postdoctoral psychology fellows. The externship is a one-year, 16-hour per week
commitment. Positions will begin on July 1 and end on June 30. Applicants from school
and clinical psychology doctoral programs (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) are welcome to apply.
