Informal learning stage: EYFS / PMLD (p1-p4)
Children at the earliest levels of
development will access an Early Years
Foundation stage curriculum that
develops a sense of security in their
school environment that is
comprehensible and meaningful to the
learner and to his/her age. The focus is
on establishing positive interactive
relationships with others; proactively
exploring their world; gaining
environmental control skills; gaining the
highest level of personal mobility and
independence. We will reference the
CYC vision for learners with PMLD and
will ensure age appropriate activities
and experiences.
Children will be offered a range of multisensory activities.
Children will be taught to tolerate and
then enjoy a range of multi-sensory
experiences.
Children will offered structured and
unstructured play alongside their HMO &
HMP peers
Children will be immersed in a total
communication environment
Children may be introduced to TEACCH
approach
Children will be introduced to Restorative
Practice in a meaningful context

Experiencing and understanding
We are learning through living
Semi-formal learning stage: SLD (p4-p7/8)
Provision for learners who need to
experience to understand will be based
on the Early Years Foundation Stage
curriculum however it will be adapted to
the age and learning styles of the
children. Children following the HMO
semi-formal curriculum learn best when
their learning is related to their own
experience. Some may learn best
through structured play; some will learn
best through functional activities and
others will respond to thematic
approaches.
Children will be offered a range of total
communication strategies
Children will be taught to be effective
communicators with age appropriate social
skills
Children will experience structured play
activities in the classroom which mirror skills
needed for life
Children will experience opportunities to
practice skills and apply their understanding
in community settings

Refining skills & knowledge – adapted National
Curriculum
We are learning for our futures
Learners who access the HMO
formal stage of learning will focus
on the early programmes of study
from the National Curriculum.
Learning will be highly structured
with opportunities to practice new
skills and consolidate prior learning
in practical situations. Learning will
remain tangible and we will avoid
over emphasis on the abstract.
Children may have specific
interventions to address areas of
need.
Children will use a range of total
communication strategies
Children will follow a thematic approach
which facilitates skill development and
acquisition of knowledge.
Children will experience practical
learning where knowledge and
understanding can be applied
Children will experience a range of
inclusive activities that enhance their
self-esteem and/or further their
academic learning
