Teaching Multiplication Facts 0-10
The first thing you must ask yourself is, does this child already know his/her addition facts with both speed and
accuracy? How do you know this? If you can answer this with proof, then try the following plan for teaching
multiplication facts:







Begin with the x2 facts (teach these using the doubling strategy as it relates to addition- 5x2 is the same thing as
5+5 and so forth)
Next, move on to a review of the x10 facts (these are multiples of 10 or counting by 10’s)
Then teach the x5 facts (these are multiples of 5 or counting by 5’s; you can also use the 10 strategy and cut the
answer in half)
Try the x1 and x0 facts (use a rule strategy: x1 is one group of ___ so there are ____ in the group; x0 is no groups
of ____ so there are none or 0)
At this point, please practice and reinforce the x2, x10, x5, x1, and x0 facts

Next, move on to x4 facts (this is more of the doubling strategy- x2 facts doubled again)
Also teach/review the x8 facts (this is more of the doubling strategy- x4 facts doubled again or think of it as
double/double/double)
Now at this point, please practice and reinforce the x2, x4, x8, x10, x5, x1, and x0 facts


Try the x9 facts (build down from the x10 facts- find the number x 10 and then take one group away)
Practice and reinforce the x9 facts before moving on


Try the x6 facts (build up from the x5 facts-find the number x 5 and then add one group)
Practice and reinforce the x9 and x6 facts before moving on

Practice and reinforce the x2, x4, x8, x10, x5, x1, x0,x9, and x6 facts before moving on

Now we deal with the x3 and x7 facts (we must memorize these because there is no strategy)
o The only ones left to memorize are: 3x3, 3x7, and 7x7 since all of the others were previously covered
Practice and reinforce all of the multiplication facts for 0-10
