2011-12 VaSID College Division All-Sports Survey
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- For the fourth straight year and the eighth time in the last 12 years,
Christopher Newport University finished the year with the highest winning percentage for nonNCAA Division I schools in Virginia to win the Virginia Sports Information Directors
Association All-Sports College Division Survey.
The Captains and Lady Captains won 74.3% of their contests to run away with the state honors.
Overall, CNU teams finished the year with a 248-85-2 record as they combined to win 11
conference titles and had nine NCAA post-season bids.
The 74.3% winning percentage for CNU only trails their percentage of 2010-11 (77.9%) as the
top winning percentage in the last 12 years of this survey. This survey lists the overall winning
percentage of all 28 non-NCAA Division I schools in Virginia.
The Apprentice School finished second in the survey, its highest finish ever, winning 63.9% of
their contests while the University of Mary Washington was third at 62.2%. Rounding out the
top five was Lynchburg College (59.7%) and Washington & Lee University (59.4%).
On the men’s side, CNU won 73.4% of its games while Lynchburg College was second with a
62.3% winning percentage. The Apprentice School was third (59.4%), followed by RandolphMacon College (58.7%) and Southern Virginia University (57.1%).
The Apprentice School had the best percentage on the women’s side with a stellar basketball
season going 23-4 (85.2%). Christopher Newport was next winning 75.3%, followed by
Washington & Lee University (67.8%), University of Mary Washington (67.3%) and Virginia
Wesleyan College (61.9%).
Trailing CNU in the conference title race was Lynchburg College with seven, followed by the
University of Mary Washington (five) and Washington & Lee University (four). Southern
Virginia University trailed CNU in the postseason bid race with seven United States Collegiate
Athletic Association tournament bids. A three way tie for third in that race was with the
Apprentice School, University of Mary Washington and Lynchburg College with five apiece.
