Volunteering Opportunities for GVS
JUBILEE DAY CENTRE
The Jubilee Day Centre at Grandes Maisons Road, St. Sampsons is open from 9 a.m. to 3.30p.m. Mondays to Fridays. The
intention is to provide a comfortable meeting place for the older members of the community, where they can take pleasure in
the company of others, enjoy good food and benefit from the facilities that the centre has to offer. Members must generally
be over the age of 65 and mobile. Members drive themselves or are transported to Jubilee by volunteer drivers, family
members, or by the Day Centre buses – space permitting. We make a small charge for the day which covers all meals and
facilities.
Everyone is greeted and welcomed with coffee/tea and biscuits. A three course lunch is served and, in the afternoon, tea and
cake. The activities vary each day but they include exercises, crafts, quizzes, games, euchre, Scrabble and bingo. While
everyone is welcome to join in, others prefer to sit and read or chat. On some days hairdressing and manicures are available.
Professional musicians visit the centre from time to time as well as local choirs and music groups.
We have various volunteer roles at Jubilee including: Morning help in the kitchen reheating cook chill meals, serving tea/coffees and lunch, washing up (dishwasher available).
Food arrives at Jubilee pre-cooked and is then reheated (regenerated). Help is needed from approximately 10 or 10.30
a.m. to 1 p.m.
 Meeting and greeting the members, getting them settled, running a trolley shop for cards and confectionery, generally
assisting at the centre. Approximately 9.30 a.m. to noon.
 Afternoon tea helpers (always two people on duty). Serve tea and cakes and wash up afterwards (dishwasher available).
Generally assisting members before they go home at approximately 3.15 pm. Ensure that the building is secure before
leaving. Approximately 1.30 p.m. / 2 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.
 Entertaining the members with, perhaps, a quiz, crafts, games, slide show or just chatting to them– we are also open to
new ideas and suggestions. Times and days to suit volunteers.
 Hairdressing - we have a purpose built hair dressing salon where members can have their hair done between
approximately 10 a.m. and 11.30 am. Hairdressing qualifications are not necessarily needed – some ladies just want their
hair washed and set.
 Drivers – we provide transport to and from the centre for many members. We run two minibuses (one requires drivers to
have a D1 licence but the smaller one can be driven by a regular car licence holder) and also have drivers who use their
own cars to pick up members. So both minibus and car drivers would need to be available from about 9.15 a.m. to 10.30.
a.m. and/or 3.15 p.m. to 4.15 p.m.
 Bus escorts – the drivers of the minibus are accompanied by an escort to help with the members.
 Administration – if you have computer skills and were happy to help with various administration tasks we would be
pleased to hear from you.
RUSSELS DAY CENTRE
The Russels Day Centre at Le Grand Courtil, St. Martins is open from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays. We have a team
of volunteers on each day who run the centre for that day, broadly along the same lines as at Jubilee.
Some volunteers help bring clients in to the centre and then stay to help for the morning or the whole day. Generally
volunteer help is required in the following areas at various times during the day: meeting and greeting the clients and getting them settled
 running a trolley shop for cards and confectionery
 generally assisting at the centre
 serving tea/coffees and lunch
 washing up (dishwasher available)
 entertaining the members with, perhaps, a quiz, crafts, games, slide show or just chatting to them– we are also open to
new ideas and suggestions

MEALS ON WHEELS
Drivers and helpers We deliver approximately 30,000 meals per year and in order to do this we require drivers and helpers
between 10.15 am and approximately 1.15 pm six days a week, Monday to Saturday. 4 rounds go out each day from the
Princess Elizabeth Hospital. Volunteers go out in pairs, leaving the PEH at 10.30 am and returning approximately 2½ hours
later, although volunteers are asked to be aware that, should there be a problem with an elderly person, the round could take
longer. Duties are on a rota basis, organised by the Team Leaders. It is up to each volunteer to decide how often they wish to
do a duty - most people do a duty once every four weeks but some do every week.
Car washing and simple maintenance - as we have 4 cars to maintain we also need volunteers to clean the cars approximately
once a month - the cars are based at the PEH and can be taken to a nearby car wash for exterior washing and interior cleaning.
In addition to this there is inevitably the occasional puncture or other minor maintenance issue to deal with together with
taking cars to the garage for service.
SUMMER SHOWS The Emergency Team also mans a rest tent at the Summer Shows for nursing mothers and the elderly.
The tent is manned for the two days of the show on a rota basis.
DARBY AND JOAN CLUBS and GVS GOOD COMPANIONS - afternoon social clubs for the elderly.
Our Darby & Joan Club meets at the Castel Douzaine Room twice a month on a Friday afternoon and the GVS Good
Companions meet at Sylvans Club in St Peters twice a month on a Tuesday from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Volunteers organise
activities and make refreshments. There is always a need for drivers to transport members to and from the clubs.
TROLLEY SHOPS Trolley services are maintained at Le Grand Courtil and La Nouvelle Maritaine which are both residential
homes. The days of this duty vary from home to home but generally speaking, the duty lasts for a couple of hours and is on a
monthly basis with volunteers working in pairs. Some shopping is involved to 'top up' the trolleys.
BLOOD DONORS GVS volunteers telephone blood donors when they are needed by the Blood Bank. Volunteers telephone
from the PEH on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday mornings between 9.15 am and about 11.45 am.
FUNDRAISING GVS have to raise considerable funds each year and we have a fundraising committee to organise various
events during the year. They are always looking for new fundraising ideas and initiatives so if you can help with ideas or would
like to join the team or even volunteer to help at an individual event please do not hesitate to contact us.
