TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLAN
Rationale
Pottsville Beach Public School has experienced rapidly growing enrolments during the last decade.
Student population has increased from 350 students in 2005 to over 700 students in 2014. DEC
demographers predict our school population to plateau over the next two years and then increase again in
2017.
This growing enrolment has led to concerns by all stakeholders as to parking and pick up and drop off
arrangements around the school site. Tweed Council Rangers on many occasions have reported parents
parking illegally in the streets around the school and many parents have expressed their concerns about
the conjestion and safety around our school site.
A traffic management group was established in 2013 to respond to the growing concerns of stakeholders.
This group included a parent and school staff representative who consulted with Tweed Shire Council
officer Mr Micheal Kenny to formulate a long term strategy to safely manage traffic around the site.
Management
In 2013/2014 the school’s northern car park was modified to ensure ample turning and car space to
operate a flow through pick up and drop off zone for ten cars. In addition a Covered Outdoor Learning
Area (COLA) was constructed near the school entry gate for students to wait under as protection from the
elements.
The car park pick up and drop off will operate under the following conditions:

All parents wishing to use the pick up zone will be issued with a laminated A4 sheet with the
students surname printed in large bold type. This will be displayed as cars approach the pick up
zone.

Pick up cars will line up along the southern side of Cudgera Avenue waiting to enter the car park.

Overflow cars waiting for the car park will line up on the northern side of Cudgera Avenue prior to
the roundabout.

Students will be supervised in the school grounds until their parents arrive in the pick up zone, their
name will then be called and they will be directed to their car.

Drivers may exit the pick up area by turning left or right into Cudgera Avenue.

Students should not walk behind the vehicle at any time, bags are to be placed in the car cabin and
students are to enter the car from the left hand door of the vehicle.

All drivers entering and leaving the car park must by law give way to all vehicles and pedestrians.

Drivers must not leave the vehicle at any time and are required to queue and shuffle into one of
the ten spaces in the pick up zone.

The existing pick up drop off zone on the eastern side (front) will continue to operate as it already
does.
Review
It is anticipated that during its initial year of operation (2014) this plan will be reviewed by the traffic
management group at the end of each school term and appropriate adjustments made.
After the initial year the plan will be reviewed twice a year.
