JOB PURPOSE
This Instrumentation Group is primarily concerned with providing repair, calibration and
maintenance services to NHS Tayside for a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic and life
saving medical equipment, office and laboratory equipment. The post holder is a skilled
clinical engineering technologist with specialist training, experience and knowledge of a
wide range of complex medical and other equipment.
The post holder is regularly (weekly) required to work at Perth Royal Infirmary and other
sites throughout NHS Tayside. The post holder will carry out repair, scheduled preventative
maintenance, servicing, calibration, safety and acceptance checking on a wide range of
medical, laboratory, office and other equipment.

SCOPE AND RANGE
Anaesthetic
Services
The Instrumentation Equipment Services Sections provide a highly specialist repair and
maintenance service for electro medical, other electronic, mechanical, and life support
equipment throughout NHS Tayside.
This service is provided to hospitals, health centres and other facilities in Dundee, Perth,
Angus and University facilities within Ninewells Hospital.
This post is jointly based in the service sections workshops at Ninewells Hospital and Perth
Royal Infirmary but the post holder will, on a regular basis, be required to repair service and
calibrate equipment throughout the NHS Tayside area. The proportions of the split will be
determined on workload demand and be managed by the Repair and Maintenance Sections
Manager.
The post holder will participate in the repair, servicing and maintenance, acceptance and
safety checking and calibration of a wide range of complex medical and other equipment.
The post holder is managed rather than supervised and be required to plan his/her duties and
work schedules in the work areas determined by the Sections Manager. The post holder will
be expected to, in the absence of the appropriate Section Team Leader, respond promptly
and efficiently to emergency and unpredictable situations.
Financial
The post holder regularly handles and works on equipment valued at many thousands of
pounds.
The post holder will purchase parts and stock following procedures set by the department
that allow them to carry out the work. Authorization is needed for orders over £500.
5.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical (80% of time)
1) Undertake the servicing, calibration and function checking of a wide range of complex
medical devices both within the workshop and locations through-out the NHS Tayside area
2) Undertake repairs to medical and other devices using suitable fault finding techniques to
diagnose problems, including those beyond the scope of manufacturer-supplied information.
Report novel fault conditions to manufacturers
3) Exercise judgment to determine the root cause of faults in devices with multiple complex
and inter-related systems (e.g. electronic, computer and mechanical systems), which may be
due to user error, equipment failure or environmental issues (e.g. Temperature, RF
interference)
4) Participate in organizing and planning servicing, repair and calibration for the specialist area
the post holder is responsible for
5) Communicate effectively with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the equipment
problems. Assess the seriousness and implications of the problem and respond appropriately
to the urgency of the user request
6) Participate in the provision of specialised clinical technical services for preventative
maintenance, servicing, inspection and repair to a wide range of complex and patient-critical
medical equipment
7) Undertake fault finding. Apply suitable techniques to diagnose problems, including on
miniaturized equipment, with the aid of magnifiers and specialist tools. These techniques
are required for most modern medical equipment
8) Check that equipment conforms to manufacturer’s specification. Take appropriate action
where necessary
9) Provide technical advice to medical and other staff groups where appropriate including
formal and informal training in the use and maintenance of equipment
10) Participates in the supervision and training of more junior or less experienced staff in the
use and repair of equipment
11) Liaise with clinical staff to plan preventative maintenance
12) Provide technical cover in other work areas as determined by demand, this will be managed
by the Sections Manager.
Administrative (15% of time)
1) The post holder works to NHS Tayside policies, implements and contributes to
departmental and sectional policies and equipment management policies that may impact
across NHS Tayside.
2) Work carried out will comply with policies, procedures and the appropriate quality
standards ie BS EN9001 QSM.
3) Enters detailed records of work carried out, stock, and test equipment used into JINET, the
computerized record keeping system
4) Completing service records promptly and producing ancillary documentation when
required, for example test results and calibration certificates.
5) Complete and process new equipment paperwork promptly to ensure that the Supplies
Department can proceed with payment.
6) Liaise with manufacturers, suppliers and agents.
7) Participate in the monitoring of spares stock levels and the ordering of routine service
spares.
Health & Safety (5% of time)
1) Take responsibility for the use of equipment and tools and where appropriate protective
clothing /equipment
2) Responsible for all aspects of health and safety including risk assessment of tasks
Induction Standards and Code of Conduct
Your performance must comply with the national “Mandatory Induction Standards for
Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland” 2009; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare
Support Workers.

COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
1) The post holder will, on a daily basis, communicate with equipment users (healthcare
professionals, patients, clients and external organizations) to advise on the functioning, use
and safe handling of equipment and gather information on faults.
2) The post holder must have effective verbal communication skills and will have to produce
reports on work carried out on equipment. The post holder will display a high personal
standard in respect to self discipline and attitude to work.
3) The post holder will regularly deal with situations where user’s expectations cannot be met.
Deal with situations where customers or suppliers are being obstructive.
4) There may be barriers to understanding where the post holder has to impart technical
information to medical and nursing staff and other equipment users on a daily basis and less
regularly to patients and carers.
5) Occasionally provides advice to patients or their carers on the use of equipment and helps
resolve problems.
6) It is the post holder’s responsibility to keep the user informed of the status of the work being
carried out on their equipment whether they are directly responsible for the work or have
arranged for an external agent to do the work.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
1) The post holder should preferably possess a BEng or BSc in a relevant engineering subject
or an HNC or HND in Engineering plus four years experience working in an equipment
repair capacity
2) Experience should consist of proven knowledge of engineering repair techniques and
theory gained during an apprenticeship or training scheme. Specific experience will be
gained through practical in-house training and manufacturers training courses. Training on
new equipment and continually updating skills is an essential part of this post
3) Working at this level the post holder will have developed significant sensory and
manipulative skills in the use and application of fine tools while working with delicate or
miniaturized equipment
4) The post holder should have experience in the use of IT equipment and software packages
(eg Word and databases)
5) The post holder should be eligible to join the voluntary register for clinical technologists
6) A comprehensive knowledge of the related health and safety issues including working with
electricity, lone working, COSHH and the NHS Tayside health and safety policies
7) The post holder should understand and comply with the quality system and adhere to the
relevant work instructions

SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
A range of test equipment is used to test, measure and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic
equipment and specialist computer software is used to analyze equipment performance. A
wide range of hand tools, precision tools and aids are used as well as chemicals solvents
adhesives and gasses. Various types of protective equipment is used depending on the
situation.

Responsibility for Records Management
All records created in the course of the business of NHS Tayside are corporate records and are
public records under the terms of the Public Records (Scotland) Act 1937. This includes email
messages and other electronic records. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep appropriate
records of your work in NHS Tayside and manage those records in keeping with the NHS Tayside
Records Management Policy and with any guidance produced by NHS Tayside specific to your
employment.
9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Effort
Regularly has to lift and maneuver heavy or awkward items (Daily 10+Kg). This is usually for
short periods however collecting and delivering equipment, working off site or out with the
workshops means carrying or pushing heavy equipment or trolleys for long periods. (Daily /
weekly). Regularly has to work in uncomfortable situations to gain access to equipment.
Mental Effort
The post holder will have to deal with frequent interruptions and competing demands for attention.
They will regularly have to drop the current task to deal with a more urgent demand (daily).
Emergency calls occur frequently and have to be assessed and prioritized. Routine calls also have to
be handled by the technical staff and they will also disrupt concentration. Servicing medical
equipment requires intense concentration for lengthy periods.
Working Conditions
Frequently works in situations where equipment access is difficult or unpleasant and where the
equipment or location may be a risk (daily)
Is regularly exposed to repairing or maintaining contaminated equipment, unpleasant smells, noise
and poor lighting (daily).
Emotional Effort
The post holder will regularly have to work on equipment in areas where patients are being treated
such as wards and theatres. They will occasionally have to deal with equipment alongside or
attached to seriously ill patients.
Physical Skills
Works on equipment that requires the use of magnifiers and fine tools (Daily).
Requires basic keyboard skills.
10. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
The post holder is part of a team based in the Instrumentation Section within Medical Physics.
Work is largely self assigned but may be re-prioritized by the appropriate Team Leader or Sections
Manager. This re-prioritization will be based on other work urgency, which will be decided by the
Sections Manager, and the quality requirements of the work area.
The post holder has to assess data from a number of sources to diagnose and resolve problems. This
involves dealing with complex equipment that interacts with other equipment, staff and patients to
perform its function.
The post holder will risk assess tasks, record and take action to minimise risk to themselves staff
and colleagues before commencing work.
At this level the post holder will be expected to liaise with customers and suppliers organize their
own work and resolve supply and access issues in addition to keeping the customer informed of
progress.

The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £21,818 to £28,462 per
annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on
appointment is normally at the minimum but may be higher
subject to verification of previous relevant service.
Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the post are <insert hours> per week.
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and
70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay,
which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime
or travelling expenses.

Annual Leave
Contributions are subject to tax relief and reduced National
Insurance contributions. NHS Tayside also makes a substantial
contribution towards scheme benefits – currently around 14% of
basic pay.
On appointment = 27 days (pro rata for part-time Staff) or 5.4
weeks per year.
After 5 years aggregated service = 29 days (pro rata for part-time
staff) or 5.8 weeks per year
After 10 years aggregated service = 33 days (pro rata for parttime staff) or 6.6 weeks per year
