As you study your words’ features, you will need to sort your words EVERYDAY.
Even if you choose to complete the above assignments ahead of time, you need to be sorting EVERYDAY.
Sort and Choice Descriptions:
Open Sort: Students choose categories and sort words. Can be sounds and or patterns.
Journal: Write at least three sentences about how your words are grouped into categories.
Closed Sort: Students sort words into given guide words.
Sentences: Write detailed sentences with context clues to convey the meaning of the word.
SAW: Sort, Alphabetize, and Write
Blind Sort: Use given guide words and as a partner calls the words to you, write them under the appropriate
heading.
Assessment: Will be a blind sort with sentences – not all words will be tested.
Timed Sort: Sort your words quickly under the given guide words.
Choice Sort: You may choose to do a Closed Sort, Blind Sort, or Speed Sort.
Tuesday’s Free-Choice Activities:
Change a Letter: Using your words, change a letter or a word part to creat a new word. For example,
capmap, flagflap, notnut.
Operations: Add or subtract prefixes and suffixes to create new words. For example, confidentialconfident.
SAW: Sort, alphabetize, and write.
Word Hunt: Hunt through your DEAR book, textbooks, or any other reading and writing for words that are
additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit you are studying. Use them to complete a written
sort.
Color Code: Write your words using a color code to show the feature in each word. The feature of each
column in your sort should be a color, and all of the letters not part of the feature should be in pencil or black.
Syllables: Sort your words and then write them by separating the syllables. (You may only do this if your list
has more than 15 two syllable words.)
Analogies: Use 10 of your words to create analogies. For example, Sailor is to boat as driver is to car.
Extend: Come up with 10 additional words for your sort. Then sort these words into your features.
