What is an Open Sort?

The student will determine how to categorize the objects/words.

Promotes logic, reasoning, higher-level thinking and conversation.
How to Complete an Open Sort at Home

Student writes a spelling word inside each box of paper provided. Cut the
boxes out.

Use the blank sheet of paper provided as “work space” for the sort.
Student should write her/his name on the “ work space.”

Student will sort his/her words into categories, which can be based on
spelling patterns, word meanings, etc; Encourage students to sort into
two or more categories.

Fold the “work space” to show the number of categories and support your
student in writing a title for each category.

Finally, have your child glue his/her sort to the back.
