1800’s Newspaper Assignment!
Grade 8: St. Aloysius
Due: Wednesday October 3rd, 2012
Grade 8’s! You have been assigned the task of creating and
naming a newspaper from the 1800’s. Your newspaper will
include 4 sections; A1, B1, C1 and D
Section A1
You need to complete at least one of the following:
Pretend you are a journalist from the 1800’s in Canada. Write a front page story
about the news of the time. Make a headline. Include the 5 W’s of the event.
Who, What When, Where, and WHY! Your story must be at least 3 paragraphs
in length.
Or
Write a biography about the life and times of a significant person of the 1800’s in
Canada. Make it a front page story with a headline. How did they become
significant in Canadian history, and most importantly WHY? Your story must be
at least 3 paragraphs in length.
Section B1
You need to complete one of the following:
Write about 3 other newsworthy events of the time.(1 paragraph in length each)
Or
Write a letter to the Editor. That is, your opinion/feelings on any subject or
event/person of the time.
Section C1
Include 3 out of the following: (Remember content needs to resemble the 1800’s)
Sports Column, Want Ads, Advertisements, Comic Strips, Puzzles, Business
Tips, Horoscopes, Food Column, Dear Abby, Style/Fashion, Real Estate, Travel.
Or
Include 2 different pictures with captions describing significant events/people of
the time. (1 paragraph in length)
Section D
Include your interview of a settler you did with you partner.
Or
Recreate an interview with a colonial settler who just has a rail line connecting
their town with Toronto.
