Black History Month As part of Black History Month, we recognize Merle McCurdy, the first black U.S. attorney in Cleveland and a
champion of American consumers. McCurdy made his name in the 1960s as a bright, young attorney who believed in civil rights. Born in
Conneaut, he put himself through the Western Reserve University Law School by working a variety of jobs, including on Great Lakes ore boats
and as a hotel bellhop, according to Plain Dealer archives. He began his career as a criminal defense lawyer. He later worked as an assistant
Cuyahoga County prosecutor. In 1960, he became the county's first public defender.
A year later, President John F. Kennedy appointed him to be the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. He gained national prestige
when he was chosen as the government's consumer counsel. "He was a wonderful, wonderful man," said Cleveland attorney Gerald Gold, who
worked with McCurdy. "He was a great teacher, a great lawyer and a great person. . . . Jurors loved him. He had a great personality and the
talent to match it." McCurdy, 55, died unexpectedly in May 1968 at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport after he spoke at the Cleveland
NAACP's Freedom Fund dinner.

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month Along with physical, verbal, and emotional abuse, teens also experience sexual abuse in their
dating relationships. Sexual abuse is much more than rape. It is also any action that persuades or coerces a person to engage in sexual activity
for any reason. This includes holding hands, kissing and so on. Remember you always have the right to say NO and that right should always
be respected by your dating partner.
Today’s fact of the day is:
Girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence, at a rate almost triple the
national average.
o There are many warning signs of abusive relationships, here are ten of the most common:
o Checking your cell phone or email without permission
o Constant put-downs
o Extreme jealousy or insecurity
o Explosive temper
o Financial control
o Isolating you from family or friends
