School Response
Thank you to the parents, carers and learners who came along to our Senior Phase and SQA
Information Evening on Thursday 1st October 2015.
You can see the feedback for our curriculum developments in the Senior Phase was very positive
and the only concern raised was:

“Will only be sitting 6 SQAs in S4 is a disadvantage for Ardrossan Academy pupils when
compared with others outside of North Ayrshire.”
In response - Many schools and local authorities have made the decision to review the number of
SQA subjects learners study in S4. Some schools still offer 8 subjects while others only offer 5. In
North Ayrshire we have made the decision that all schools will offer 6 subjects in S4 to maximise
attainment, provide flexible pathways and promote health and wellbeing of learners. This may
also mean that in individual cases it may be more appropriate for a learner to only study 5 SQA
subjects or they may achieve 7 due to learning which takes place outside of school eg. Music or
Physical Education. It is also important to recognise the level of qualifications learners have
achieved when they leave school is of paramount importance and therefore in Ardrossan
Academy we are seeking to develop our course choices, vocational options and consortium
arrangements to provide breadth and depth of learning as well as ensuring we are meeting the
needs of all our learners.
