English week 6-7

The princess and the pea.

Once upon a time in a country not far away there lived a king and a queen. They lived in a castle. They had a son, a prince. The prince wanted very much to get married but he couldn´t find a suitable princess. The king and the queen tried to help their son to find a princess. They put in advertisements in the newspapers , they searched on the internet and they sent faxes to kings and queens in other countries. They invited one princess after another to the castle to meet the prince. But he never fell in love with any of them.

The prince was very sad.

One dark November evening the door rang at the castle. Who could it be? The weather was rainy and there was a dreadful wind. Who could be out in this awful weather? Even the royal dogs didn´t want to go out. The queen sent a maid to open the door. The maid came back after a couple of minutes and said:

There´s a princess at the door. She´s lost her way and asks if she can stay the night here.

-What? A princess? said the queen.

She says so, said the maid. She´s wet through poor thing.

I had better go and talk to her, said the queen.

But when she got to the door the prince was already there. He had heard what the maid had said and had rushed to the door to look at the princess. He was already helping her off with her coat and shoes.

He had fallen in love with the beautiful young girl at first sight . He was just going to ask her to marry him when the queen arrived . The queen ordered some maids to take care of the girl, to find some dry clothes and to give her something to eat. Then she took the prince with her to talk to the king.

Oh, I love her. I want to marry her. She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen , said the prince.

English week 6-7

-Take it easy now, said the queen. Maybe she is not a princess.

Perhaps she´s a model or a popstar.

We don´t know. But don´t worry , she said, I will give her the test.

The test? said both the king and the prince.

Yes, said the queen. I´ll give her the pea test.

The pea test? said the king and the prince. How can a pea test tell if she is a real princess?

You´ll see, said the queen. Just wait till tomorrow. And she went away to talk to the maids.

That evening everybody was very busy at the castle. The maids prepared the best guestroom for the girl and that took a long time.

The prince couldn´t concentrate on anything. When he went to bed and closed his eyes he saw the girls beautiful face. He was really in love.

The girl couldn´t sleep at all. The bed was terribly uncomfortable and outside the wind and the rain went on. Next morning everybody was tired. The king, the queen and the prince were having breakfast in the breakfast room when the girl came in. She looked terrible. You could see that she had not slept at all . The king was chocked.

What´s the matter? he asked. Haven´t you slept well?

I haven´t slept at all, answered the girl and looked irritated.

The king looked at the queen.

Didn´t you give her our best bed dear? he asked.

Yes, of course I did the queen said. The maids prepared the beds with ten swandown mattresses and on top of those ten eiderdown mattresses. It couldn´t have been softer .

Soft! said the girl. It was terrible! It was the most uncomfortable bed I´ve ever slept in. It was like sleeping on a bag of potatoes. I must be black and blue all over .

English week 6-7

The prince was very upset . He loved this girl. Why had they given her such an awful bed? He wanted her to like the castle. He didn´t want her to go away.

At three o´clock I had had enough. I got up and tried to find out what the problem was. And look what I found under the mattresses.

She held out the pea.

A pea? said the king and the prince. Why was there a pea in your bed? Who put it there?

I did, said the queen. I wanted to see if you were a real princess my dear and now we know you are. Only a real princess could feel a pea under all the mattresses.

Of course I´m a real princess. I told you last night, didn´t I, said the girl.

The prince was very delighted . On the spot he asked the princess to marry him and she answered:

Yes, why not?

The king and the queen arranged a magnificent wedding with over a thousand guests. And the prince and the princess lived happily ever after . But every night before they went to bed the prince checked to see that there wasn´t a pea or anything else under the mattress.

Of course there never was.

What happened to the pea? Well if you want to see it you could go to the royal museum. There in the last room on the left you´ll find the pea in a crystal pyramide. It´s true.
