Co-Presidents Report

Money Issues

 Treasurer’s Report

Deena reported that our starting balance from June 4 was $7,528.89.

Income brought in was from membership dues and summer camp for $3,511.84. This brought the amount to $11,040.73. Expenditures included expenses to attend the NAEA national conference and Western Region events, the surety bond, routine expenses from board members, the Harry Hart Scholarship, consulting fee for the website, retreat and summer camp expenses.

The total of these expenditures come to $6,200.31. The final checking account balance is

$4,840.42. There were 2 questions about slight discrepancies, one where the number was misreported from one column to another for the amount of $1 and the other was a 5 cent difference in the amount for a check for expenses to Linda Morgan. Deena will follow up on these. Bob moved to approve the minutes with the two changes. Cindy seconded the motion.

Motion passed unanimously.

Cal and Laurie reviewed the checkbook.

Professional Development Conferences

2014 Conference

– Russell

Cindy reported that changes in the Bank of America have been worked out. Registration is on line and so far there are about 50 members registered for the conference. Dennis Pochѐ will be doing 2 workshops at the conference. Paula Jones will be the keynote speaker and has just written a book that she will sign and sell at the Deines Center.

Three students and five teachers received grants to attend the conference. The teachers will receive $200 and students get their registration free.

2015 Conference – Pittsburg Aaron and Chris have met several times to consider the workshop locations at PSU and schedules. The theme will be “Mining Creativity”. They have surveyed Pittsburg for hotel/motel rooms and food possibilities. The conference will be October

8-10, 2015. Bob and Joe will also help with the conference. They are looking for more teachers from the area to help.

2016 Conference - Rock Springs Linda N-B reported that we are on the calendar for Rock

Springs conference. Dates can’t be set more than a year in advance.

National Leadership Convention Linda NB and Shawny reported about their experiences in Santa Fe.

The leadership conference was developed by the national organization to encourage the development of leaders. The national leadership conference will alternate each year with regional conventions. A complete detailed report will be posted in the OneDrive folder.

New Orleans National Convention 2015 – the NAEA Conference will be March 26-28, 2015.

Board Position Reports

Administrator Representative Helen reported she is developing a database of art administrators. Linda suggested to also include junior and community colleges. She met with a few mid-August. Helen also told the board about the Buhler School District developing their entire school curriculum around the new arts standards.

Archives/Historian No report given.

Awards

Angie reported the award winners were: Elementary—Katie Morris , Middle

Level—Cindy Balthazor , Secondary—Jennifer Hudson , Museum—Karen Gerety Folk , Retired—

Bob Cross , Art Enhancer-Marty Myers (Russell) , and Overall—Tina Murano. At the awards ceremony the co-presidents will announce the winners and the nominator will be able to say a few words. There was discussion about 2 changes in the requirements for awards. One change is that current board members are not eligible for national awards. The other is that nominators cannot be related to those they nominate. A short discussion concerning the repercussions of these changes ensued.

Membership Linda N-B reported that the current membership is 304 which is down from last year’s 338. It does allow us a second delegate to the delegates’ assembly. The “Join in July”

Campaign gives 3 teachers free registration to the fall conference for joining. Two teachers renewed lapsed memberships and one joined for the first time. Linda NB is sending out lots of blasts through Constant Contact about the conference, scholarships, grant opportunities, and member’s exhibit. She reminded us that she can send information out to the entire list of teachers across the state, focus on a single region or teaching level. If you need information sent, just send it to her exactly how you want it and the date to send it and she will take care of it. Linda NB also reported that Marge Banks is still providing a great help keeping the master list of art teachers across the state updated. Work will soon begin on a list of private school art teachers and to develop a database for higher education. Linda NB reminded Cindy that as people register for the conference she needs to make sure they are current members. The eve before the conference Linda NB will print a list of members for on-site registration.

Museum Education Representative Karen reported that she is still working on the museum database that will provide museum websites and resources for educators.

Region Representative Ginger and Chris reported that the regional meetings will be during lunch on Friday. They would like everyone to eat as a group and then divide up during dessert to meet in regional groups.

Sales Alyssa was absent but sent her report in to Linda NB. She plans to sell buttons at the conference again. Please send any design ideas for buttons to Angie. Alyssa also wanted to know what the board’s wishes for YAM T-shirts were – create a new design or use the one from last year. The board recommended that using the old logo was fine but not to add a date. Other recommendations were to get more youth sizes, and to use a color that was both boy and girl friendly. The board recommended that if Alyssa could find a local printer to make the T-shirts for her to go ahead.

Secondary Representative Joe was unable to attend but sent his report to Bob. Bob shared

Joe’s New York experiences with the group. Times Square was a favorite on the first night.

They spent time with 8 other winners and they had a memorable experience. The Harry Hart

Scholarship winners have received their college scholarships. Ally Davis will attend Cowley

County Community College and Haven Bradbury will attend Allen County Community College.

Webmaster Katie reported on her meeting with web designer Cavanaugh Creative. He reviewed our site and suggested a few changes but overall he said that the website looked good.

Everything is updated but Katie is asking that if any errors were spotted to please let her know.

Youth Art Month Lynn will join Shawny as co-chairperson to head this committee. Plans are coming along fine.

Committee Reports

Endowment Grant Update Laurie, Bob, and Linda N-B are still studying the options. The new official name is Endowment Grants.

Old Business

Summer Camp Report Kris reported that there were 23 attendees for summer camp at ESU.

Three different classes were offered. Seventeen applied for college credit through Friends

University. Three ESU students received scholarships which allowed them to attend free in return they helped set things up for the instructors. Summer camp saw a profit of a little over

$500.

Revision discussion for Professional Development Grants Laurie requested permission to change the grant amounts from 2 for $750 and 3 for $500 to all 5 at $600. It would total the same amount of money. She felt that having grants for different amounts would make the process harder. After discussion, Laurie moved to change the 5 professional development grant amounts all to $600. Cal seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

New Business

Superintendents Contact List Joyce sent her report to Linda N-B. She is working on developing a database of school superintendents.

KSAAE Bob reported that the Kansas Alliance for Arts Education will have a conference in

Hutchinson at the Cosmosphere on Saturday, September 20. He encouraged members to attend

Cindy volunteered to represent KAEA at the conference. The theme will be “From Stem to

Steam”.

2015 KAEA Calendar The board worked on the rough draft of the calendar for 2015. Linda

NB and Linda M asked the board to review their calendars and to check on and confirm several dates for the calendar. Kris will send a draft out when she sends the minutes. The calendar will be adopted at the November meeting.
