OEDS DIVERSITY PLAN
Diversity Goal 1: Recruit, retain, advance, recognize, and promote a diverse faculty, staff and
administration while creating a campus-wide community that celebrates its own diversity as one of its
strengths and as a means of shaping Mason’s identity as a university.
Current Status:
1.1 School/Department Goal or Implementation Strategy for Diversity Goal 1
OEDS will improve, recruit, and promote partnerships with Human Resources and the Provost’s Office to
facilitate better outreach/communication with Mason staff/faculty to ensure all academic and non-academic
searches are conducted by individuals who attended search committee training.
Performance Indicators for this Goal/Strategy
1. 100% of search committee members must complete search committee training before participating in a
search.
2. Chairs/Deans should ensure recruitment pools at least approach availability of diverse groups as required by
EO Plan.
3. Evidence of broad-based search must be certified by the OEDS Director.
Tasks
1.1A – Advertisements for positions should be placed in outlets that are most likely to attract individuals who could
make contributions to diversity. Wording of the ads should include that Mason is particularly interested in staff and
faculty who have an interest in contributing to our commitment to diversity.
1.1B – Reasons for non-selection of potential candidates or rejection of offers by candidates from short list must be
compiled for each search.
1.1C – Utilize PFF program as potential pool for hiring new PhDs into tenure-track positions.
1.1D – Train Chairs, Assistant/Associate Deans, and other hiring authorities on search procedures and hiring
practices.

address diversity initiatives at Mason.
1.2B – Identify/hire staff member(s) to work identify fundraising opportunities within local DC/VA Metro
community to support diversity initiatives at Mason.
1.2C – Initiate actions towards creating first-ever OEDS fundraising event.
