BBSRC New Investigator Scheme

Award type Young investigator awards
This assists early-career researchers - ie newly employed university lecturers, lecturer level
equivalent fellows whose awards were secured in open competition, and researchers in Research
Council institutes at the unified Research Council band E or its equivalent - to secure their first
major element of research funding. Applicants must not have received competitive research
funding from any source, as a Principal Investigator, that included post-doctoral research assistant
staff support costs.

Aimed at scientists who have demonstrated high potential and who wish to establish themselves
as independent researchers. Applicants should not exceed 10 years in active postgraduate

EPSRC
EPSRC Fellowships (new approach)

Deadline information Although there is no formal closing date, the University will be operating an
internal support process which will tie in with EPSRC's panel meetings, at which applications will
be considered following prioritisation via external review. Deadlines for the University process

NERC Independent Research Fellowships

NERC Council has decided to streamline the provision of responsive mode Fellowships into a single
scheme - the NERC Independent Research Fellowships (IRFs) - that will replace the previous
schemes (Postdoctoral Fellowships and Advanced Fellowships).
The new scheme is designed to develop scientific leadership among the most promising early-career
environmental scientists, by giving all Fellows five years' support, which will allow them sufficient
time to develop their research programmes, and to establish international recognition.

Public Engagement Fellowships

The aim of the scheme is to contribute to the STFC's Public Engagement Programme by investing in
good communicators with research credibility. They will act as champions or ambassadors for
STFC's science, technology, engineering and mathematics ('STEM') work to schools, the media or
public audiences. Public Engagement fellowships are aimed at those with significant research
experience who have demonstrated a track record in outreach or communications work. The
fellowships will recognise and reward current practitioners and enable them to expand the work
they do in public engagement.

Ernest Rutherford Fellowship

Award type Early Career Fellowship
The Fellowships will enable early career researchers with clear leadership potential to establish a
strong, independent research programme. They will encourage talented researchers in UK
universities to remain in the country and at the same time attract outstanding overseas researchers
to the UK. This new scheme replaces and builds on STFC's Advanced Fellowship programme. Each
Fellowship will last for five years, with 12 being offered annually. Fellows will receive support for
their salary and be able to bid for significant additional funds to support their research.
Applicants must have a PhD and a minimum of five years’ research experience from the start of the
postgraduate programme leading to the award of a PhD and 1 September 2014 with, normally, a
minimum of two years’ postdoctoral experience.

RSE/STFC Enterprise Fellowships

Support for STFC funded scientists who want to develop a business idea based on STFC funded

The fellowships last for two years and assist graduates and postgraduates who have had careers in

These aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage
of their academic careers but with a proven record of research. Applications are invited from those
with a doctorate who had their doctoral viva not more than five years from the application closing
date. The trust will contribute 50 per cent of each fellow's total salary costs up to £23,000 per annum

and the balance is to be paid by the host institution. Candidates must therefore go through the UoS
Faculty of Science selection process or secure a commitment from their department to fund the

This scheme is for non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to
conduct research in the UK. The scheme provides the opportunity for the best early stage postdoctoral researchers from all over the world to work at UK research institutions for a period of two
years. The scheme covers the broad range of the natural and social sciences and the humanities and
provides £24,000 per year for subsistence costs, and £8,000 per year for research expenses, as well as
a one-off payment of £2,000 for relocation expenses.

This scheme offers opportunities for postdoctoral scientists to undertake research at the interfaces
between biology/medicine and mathematics, engineering, computer, physical or chemical sciences,
firstly at MIT and then at a UK institution. Candidates will be expected to identify an important
biomedical research question and to propose a personal interdisciplinary training programme to
achieve their research aims. The aim is to support those who will train in a new research area that is
complementary to, but distinct from, their current field of expertise, to enable an interdisciplinary
approach to their research question - e.g. you might be a physicist wanting to work on a biologybased programme, or a biologist wanting to undertake a bio-engineering project.

The Wellcome Trust is particularly interested in receiving applications from university lecturers within
the first five years of their independent research careers.
New Investigator Awards are intended to support strong researchers who are in the early stages of
their independent research careers and have already shown that they can innovate and drive
advances in their field of study. Candidates should be no more than five years from appointment to
their first academic position.
These Awards provide flexible support at a level and length appropriate to enable the best
researchers to address the most important questions about health and disease. Awards may equally
be small or large, but candidates should be able to articulate a compelling vision for their research,
while ensuring that their proposal and requested funding is appropriate to their research experience
to date.
